Saitama Seibu Lions starter Kona Takahashi is not generating significant interes
t from MLB clubs at this stage, and industry sources indicate that any potential
 deal is far more likely to be a minor-league contract than a guaranteed Major L
eague roster spot.

According to recent reports from NPB circles, the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphi
a Phillies are the only teams to have expressed notable interest in the 28-year-
old right-hander thus far. Most contending clubs appear focused on higher-profil
e Japanese players this winter.

Takahashi possesses an elite fastball that touches 97+ mph, but he struggled to
generate swing-and-miss with the pitch throughout the 2025 season. Scouts believ
e he would need considerably more induced vertical break to translate that veloc
ity into consistent success. His secondary offerings also need more refinement—
his splitter could be effective but there is too much contact for him to be a lo
ck as a starter in the majors.





Munetaka Murakami - 1B/3B

The Murakami market appears to have shrunk a lot compared to 2024, and there are
 rumblings that his next contract could be a one to two year deal with some opti
ons rather than a guaranteed long-term contract. It's more reasonable to expect
a 4 or 5 year deal at 12-14 million. The Yankees are not one of the teams in the
 running for Murakami as of yet. The Phillies and Angels are two teams that have
 been mentioned by NPB sources in recent days, and his market could also expand
to non-contenders as the process moves along.



The Yankees would only sign Murakami if there is a bargain on the table in which
 they can trial his power at Yankee Stadium. He does not improve the team defens
ively and his zone contact issues will make it difficult for him to establish co
nsistent success in the majors in 2026. He's a 26 year old infielder, so he will
 have some room to make adjustments against higher velocity.

en Japan and South Korea, where scouts had the opportunity to evaluate NPB star
Kazuma Okamoto in person. Among the clubs in attendance were:

The Yankees are considered a strong potential fit for Okamoto, particularly as a

 high-impact platoon option at first base/designated hitter, where he could prim
arily face left-handed pitching in a role that would provide consistent at-bats.
 However, New York’s ability to offer everyday playing time remains uncertain w
ithout a clear rotational plan at those positions.



Should the Yankees be unable to guarantee a starting role—widely viewed as a pr
iority for Okamoto—viable alternatives include the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Pa
dres, and Philadelphia Phillies, all of whom could provide a clearer path to reg
ular playing time. The Mets, meanwhile, are expected to prioritize the re-signin
g of Pete Alonso, which likely removes them from serious contention for Okamoto
’s services.



There are rumors that his contract could fall into the 3 year / $30-35 million r
ange.

ting pitchers in the upcoming 2025-26 posting class, with numerous contending te
ams expressing strong interest in acquiring his services this offseason.

The San Diego Padres remain among the leading candidates to sign Imai; however,
the organization’s ongoing financial challenges and the possibility of an impen
ding ownership sale could raise concerns for the right-hander, who is prioritizi
ng long-term stability and sustained contention. Sources indicate that Imai is s
eeking a franchise committed to competing throughout the duration of his next co
ntract, and the Padres instability could be a reason why he passes on them for a
nother contender.

 years, the Yankees view Imai as their strongest opportunity to land an elite ar
m from NPB until the next major wave of talent becomes available around 2028-29.



Imai has already expressed his intentions to play for a strong contender in a bi
g market, so it comes down to which market he seeks to play in. One NPB source b
elieves he does have "interest in playing for the Yankees and Jays in the East."

t with their current rotation depth—have not been connected to Imai.

Song Sung-mun is drawing interest from MLB teams, namely the Giants, Cubs, Yanke
es, Mariners, Angels, and Pirates. Sungmun is a versatile infielder who is more
 known for his bat than the glove. He is effective against velocity and has a go
od approach against left handed pitchers—better than righties. The Yankees have
 done their due diligence on Sung-mun, but their interest is not that strong. KB
O hitters have a bigger adjustment period (closer to High A to AA) than NPB.
