When Joe Marsh started as an intern at Comcast Spectacor more than 20 years ago,
he never expected he’d become the chief executive officer of an esports powerh
ouse in Korea.
二十多年前,Joe Marsh 剛到Comcast當實習生時,完全沒想到自己有一天會成為韓國電競
巨頭的執行長
T1 Entertainment & Sports, a joint venture between Comcast Spectacor and South K
orea’s SK Telecom, is one of the most successful esports organizations in the w
orld. The team won its sixth League of Legends World Championship earlier this m
onth over its rival KT Rolster in China. It was T1’s third straight League of L
egends title, marking the first three-peat in the event’s history.
T1 Entertainment & Sports 是 Comcast Spectacor 與韓國 SK Telecom合資的企業,也是

At the center of the team’s success is a 29-year-old who calls himself Faker wh
o was recently referred to as “the LeBron James” of esports for his combinatio
n of skill and longevity. There also are two big contributors from the Philadelp
hia area: Marsh and Tucker Roberts. Marsh, a Villanova and Millersville graduate
, is the CEO of the team. Roberts, a Penn graduate, is the chief innovation offi
cer and president of gaming & emerging technology for Comcast Spectacor.

As CEO, Marsh has recruited team members, built a new office space in Korea, par
tnered with major brands like Disny, and collaborated with K-pop superstars BTS
. T1 has even created its own gaming cafe, a popular pastime in Korea, with play
er-themed food, drinks, and computers.
身為執行長Marsh負責招募隊員、在韓國打造新的辦公空間,並與包括迪士尼在內的大品牌
合作,也與韓國頂尖偶像 BTS 合作,T1 甚至開設了自家的網咖——這在韓國是非常受歡迎
的休閒活動——店內提供以選手為主題的餐點、飲品與電腦
Of course, the journey to all the team’s success took time — but it got its st
art right here in Philadelphia. And the man behind it all loves to showcase his
Philly roots whenever he gets the chance.
當然這支隊伍的成功不是一蹴可幾——但這段旅程的起點就在費城,而幕後推手 Marsh 也

One thing the team didn’t need to borrow — or even attempt to replicate — was
a rabid fan base, the kind Marsh grew up a part of in Philly.

“[Korean] fans are very passionate, just as passionate as Philly fans,” Marsh
said. “And they don’t accept anything less than greatness — and they’ll supp
ort you through thick and thin. But they want to make sure the players are givin
g their 100%, just like Philly.
「(韓國)粉絲非常熱情,和費城的球迷一樣熱情」Marsh 說「他們不接受不夠出色的表現

“I mean, that’s why I think Tucker [Roberts] and I have done so well in Korea.
Because we grew up in Philadelphia in a town that took their sports seriously.
And yeah, it’s esports and it’s different in terms of medium, but it’s the sa
me concept. It just happens to be played online. And I think the level of fandom
that they have in Korea, it’s crazy.”

Forming T1: ‘Going to Asia was the best way to do it’

Marsh was hired at Comcast Spectacor full-time in 2006. While the Langhorne nati
ve fulfilled the duties of his position, he worked toward his MBA in finance ana
lytics and strategic management at Villanova, graduating in 2016 — right around
the time Comcast wanted to get into the gaming industry.

Together, Marsh and Roberts eventually developed Comcast’s first esports team,
the Philadelphia Fusion, which was part of the Overwatch League. The Fusion comp
eted in the team-based, multiplayer first-person shooter game Overwatch, making
the finals in their first year.
之後Marsh 與 Roberts 一同打造出 Comcast 的第一支電競隊伍——Overwatch聯盟的費城
融合隊(Philadelphia Fusion),融合隊參與的是以團隊為主的多人第一人稱射擊遊戲《
鬥陣特攻》,並在首年就打進總決賽
In 2021, the Fusion moved to South Korea, where they rebranded as Seoul Infernal
, putting an end to Comcast’s plans of building the nation’s first video gamin
g arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. An arena solely for gaming may
be considered an anomly in the United States, but it’s the norm in Asia. Fans
have regularly been filling arenas to attend esports events. It’s why the move
to Asia seemed like a necessary one for Marsh.

And although the Overwatch League folded after the pandemic, the former Philly t
eam was the blueprint for what Marsh and Roberts wanted T1 to be.
雖然Overwatch聯盟在疫情後解散,但當年的費城融合隊,正是 Marsh 與 Roberts 打造 T1
的藍圖
“I think they had the right business model, wrong game, and wrong region,” Mar
sh said. “I think what we’re doing now in Korea is basically what the Overwatc
h League was trying to do. We realized pretty early on that the best gamers are
in Korea. And, you know, if we’re going to make a splash for Comcast, going ove
r to Asia was the best way to do it.”
「我覺得他們的商業模式是對的,但遊戲選錯了,地區也選錯了」Marsh 說「我們現在在韓

In 2019, Comcast Spectacor partnered with Korea’s SK Telecom to launch T1 Enter
tainment & Sports. With the partnership, SK Telecom T1’s League of Legends team
rebranded to T1 and Marsh was named the CEO, put in charge of the growth and op
timization of T1’s global presence.
2019 年,Comcast與韓國 SK Telecom 合作創建了 T1 Entertainment & Sports,在這項合
作下,SK Telecom T1 的《英雄聯盟》隊伍更名為 T1,而Marsh 則被任命為執行長,負責

T1 Entertainment & Sports competes in a number of competitive gaming segments, i
ncluding Valorant, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Tekken 8. However, League of Legends
is the most popular. The game is a five-on-five online video game in which each
player selects one of 171 characters and attempts to destroy the opposing team
’s base.
T1 Entertainment & Sports 涉及多個電競項目,包括《特戰英豪》、《絕地求生:戰場》
、《鐵拳 8》等,不過最受歡迎的仍然是《英雄聯盟》——一款 5 對 5 的線上對戰遊戲,
每位玩家從 171 名角色中挑選其一,試圖摧毀對方基地。
While T1 has become something of a dynasty, it’s not always smooth sailing.
儘管 T1 已經有了王朝級的地位,但走過的路並不總是一帆風順。
“I think there’s times throughout the year where everyone wants to kill each o
ther and then there’s times of the year where everything’s going great,” Mars
h said. “And, you know, a lot of people see the duck on top of the water glidin
g. What I see is the feet below paddling 100 miles an hour. And my job is to mak
e sure people only see the duck and not the feet because people don’t care how
the sauce is made, right?
「有時候隊伍一年當中會出現大家都想掐死彼此的時期,也有一切順利的時候」Marsh 說「
很多人看到的是水面上悠哉滑行的鴨子,但我看到的是水下那雙拼命以時速百里在划的腳,
而我的工作就是確保外界只看到鴨子,而不是那雙腳——因為沒有人在乎配醬是怎麼做的,
對吧?」
“They just want to know if the trophy is getting lifted. And for me, I’ve lear
ned over the years to enjoy the journey as much as the result. Because it’s not
, it’s almost an empty feeling. Like, you win and you’re like, wow, that was r
eally hard. And then I’m already like, OK, like, how do we re-sign this roster?
How do we do that? Like, I think we enjoyed it for like a half a day. And then
it’s back to business as usual.”
「大家只想知道最後獎盃有沒有被舉起,而我自己這些年也學會了享受過程,就像享受結果
一樣,因為有時那種感覺其實是空的——你贏了,會想『哇,真的太難了』,但接著我就會
開始想:接下來要怎麼續約這套陣容?要怎麼安排?我們大概只慶祝了半天吧,然後就又回
到正常的工作節奏了。」
Recruiting the right team
招募理想的隊伍
If LeBron James was walking down the street, he would get stopped and asked for
a bunch of photos. The same thing can be said about top gamers when they’re wal
king around the streets of South Korea.
如果LeBron James 走在街上,他一定會被攔下來要求合照,而在南韓,頂尖電競選手走在
街上,也是同樣的待遇。
That’s how popular gaming is in Asia. And the T1 brand has grown beyond the com
petitive scene. The players are treated as celebrities — even Marsh has been st
opped for photos and autographs.
這就是電競在亞洲的受歡迎程度,而 T1 的品牌已經超越一般競技領域,選手們受到的待遇
宛如明星——甚至連 Marsh 自己都曾被粉絲攔下要求合照與簽名。
But no one gets stopped more than Lee Sang-Hyeok, known to millions as Faker. Wh
ether your G.O.A.T. is Michael Jordan or LeBron, T1 has that guy — and he’s be
en delivering for over a decade, earning millions in salary and endorsements.
但沒有任何人比李相赫(Faker)更常被攔下來,他是無數人心中的「GOAT」,不論你心中
的 GOAT(史上最佳)是 Michael Jordan 還是 LeBron,T1 也擁有那個級別的人物——而

Faker has been on the top of the gaming world dating back to his debut in 2013,
when he was just 17 years old. Now, he’s still considered one of the best playe
rs. Not many believed he could have such longevity — especially when 21 is cons
idered ancient in the gaming world.
Faker 自 2013 年以 17 歲之齡出道後,就一直站在電競世界的頂端,如今他依然被視為最
佳選手之一,很少有人相信他能維持這麼長的巔峰——尤其在電競圈,21 歲就常被視為「

However, instead of slowing down with age, Faker has adapted his gaming style to
stay on top.
然而Faker 不僅沒有隨年齡下滑,反而調整了自己的打法,讓自己持續站在最前線。
“I didn’t expect to be active for this long when I first started,” Faker said
in an email through a translator. “Back then, I just loved the game and wanted
to get better. As I kept challenging myself year after year, I found myself con
tinuing this journey. Having new goals each season has helped me stay motivated.
”
「剛開始時,我從沒想過自己能打這麼久。」Faker 透過翻譯在電子郵件中說「當時我只是
單純喜歡遊戲、想變得更強,隨著我每年不斷挑戰自己,我就這樣一路走了下來。每一季都
設定新的目標,讓我保持動力。」
When it comes to recruiting players, it’s not always about creating a super tea
m with the best of the best. It’s about building a group that can work cohesive
ly together.
在招募選手方面,目的並不是把最強的人都堆在一起,而是打造一支能夠完美合作的隊伍。
“It’s a mix of not just signing the best players,” Marsh said. “We did that
in 2019 before I got there and we didn’t win the championship. It’s about find
ing the best five people that can play together to win. In the game League of Le
gends, we’re most known for communication. And that’s what separates the champ
ions from the teams that are falling short. And, you know, we’re fortunate to h
ave Faker, obviously the greatest gamer of all time. But he’s a guy who has evo
lved over the years from superstar to veteran leader and facilitator.
「重點不是只把最強的人簽過來」Marsh 說「2019 年我還沒加入前,他們就做過那件事,
但也沒有奪冠,關鍵是找到最適合彼此、能一同贏球的五個人,在《英雄聯盟》裡,我們最

“We’ve done a good job putting kids around him that can thrive off of what he
’s able to do. Because a lot of times if you watch our games, especially agains
t lesser competition, they’re just chasing Faker around the map to kill him for
a clip for YouTube. Meanwhile, my guys are winning games, right? They’re doing
the objective.”
「我們也成功在他身邊找了能夠從他的能力中受益的孩子們,因為如果你看比賽,尤其對上
較弱的隊伍時,他們常常只是在地圖上追著Faker打,想殺他然後上YouTube,但同時,我們
的隊員正在贏比賽——他們在完成目標。」
However, the recruiting process can be challenging. Not only is it difficult wit
h the language barrier, but when Marsh started in 2019, most players didn’t eve
n have agents. Marsh would either have to speak directly to the players or to th
eir family members. Despite the challenges, he managed to create a family-first
culture with the team.
不過招募的過程並不容易,除了語言差異外,Marsh 2019 年剛開始時,多數選手甚至沒有
經紀人,他不是得直接和選手談,就是和選手的家人溝通,儘管如此他仍成功在隊伍中建立
了以家庭為核心的文化。
“I try to make sure that the families are a big part of what we’re doing at T1
because part of the reason why the players stay in Korea is to have that safety
net — whether it’s family or their friends,” Marsh said. “It’s a long, gri
nding year. Most of my guys are in their early 20s. Imagine being a pro, making
tons of money, having the weight of the world on your shoulders from not only yo
ur country but fans around the world. You need that support system. And we try t
o do that.
Marsh 說:「我會盡量確保選手們的家人能夠成為 T1 運作的一大部分,因為選手留在韓國
的理由之一,就是能有一個安全網──無論是家人或朋友,這一年非常漫長、非常消耗精力
,而我的隊員大多才二十出頭,想像一下,在這麼年輕的時候成為職業選手、賺很多錢,還
要承受來自國家以及全世界粉絲的巨大壓力,你一定需要一個支撐系統,而我們就是在努力
提供這個。」
Added Faker: “T1 is a very special team to me. I’ve been with the organization
since my debut, and even through many changes and difficult moments, we’ve alw
ays grown together by trusting one another. Our success comes from the combined
effort of players, coaches, staff, and the fans who support us.”
Faker 補充說:「T1 對我來說是非常特別的隊伍,我從出道以來一直在這個組織,即使經
歷了很多變化與困難時刻,我們都因為彼此信任而一起成長,我們的成功來自選手、教練、
工作人員,以及支持我們的粉絲共同的努力」
And it all started in Philly.
而這一切,都起源於費城。
