The Rockets Catch Fire - NYTimes.com
Led by James Harden and Jeremy Lin, the Houston Rockets have become one of the N.B.A.'s most exciting teams, scoring more than 100 points in seven consecutive games. ...
The New York Times, By JIM CAVAN
It was one year ago this week that a little-known Taiwanese-American
point guard from Harvard became a global superstar.
Jeremy Lin may never again grace all the magazine covers and highlight
reels that marked his run with the Knicks last season, but that has not
stopped his new team from becoming one of the N.B.A.’s most exciting
young squads, thanks in large part to Lin.
It’s a recipe that has landed the Rockets in eighth place in the
WesternConference, one game ahead of the similarly young
Trail Blazers and four games ahead of the fast-fracturing
Los Angeles Lakers. Although a playoff spot is far from secure,
the Rockets are one team that has managed to outstrip
preseason expectations.
After the team acquired James Harden in a multiplayer
sign-and-trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, many wondered
whether the Rockets’ shiny new backcourt could effectively
mesh; both Lin and Harden were known to be ball-dominant
guards who thrived best in high pick-and-roll situations. How,
then, might the new coach Kevin McHale manage the new-look
Rockets?
Despite some early struggles, by Jan. 1 the Harden-Lin tandem
was registering a plus-minus of 3.0 while sharing the court –
respectable, if not exactly incendiary. During the team’s
seven consecutive 100-point games, however, that number has
mushroomed to 15.2., according to NBA.com.
In that stretch, the Rockets have connected on 44 percent of
their 3-point attempts, compared with 35 percent before Jan. 24,
the day before the team’s latest scoring tear began. Furthermore,
NBA.com’s metrics show numerous Harden-Lin lineups registering
solid-to-outstanding plus-minus numbers. The most common
unit over the last couple of weeks – Lin, Harden, Omer Asik,
Patrick Patterson and Chandler Parsons – has had a 3-point clip
of 46 percent and shot 55 percent on field goals over all while
registering a plus-minus of 17.
What’s more, Harden and Lin have seen their own numbers
improve, especially Lin’s: 15.9 points, 7 assists and 2.3 steals
with 50 percent shooting (including 48 percent from behind the arc).
Harden has remained blistering, tallying 25.7 points, 5.7 rebounds,
6.7 assists and 1.9 steals with 52 percent shooting (and 50 percent
from 3).
Of course, a seven-game sample size does not a season make.
Still, Houston’s play – and that of its star guards in particular –
is made only more compelling by the team’s prospects.
After years of middling success, General Manager Daryl Morey has
constructed a roster that is high on upside as well as financially
flexible. With the exception of Harden (signed through the 2018
season), Houston has no contractual commitments beyond 2015.
With just over $39 million slated for next season, it will have more
than enough room to reel in a near-max free agent – if the Rockets
so choose.
Houston’s cap gets a little tricky in 2014 when a pair of so-called
poison pills – Lin and Asik’s respective $15 million third
years – are scheduled to kick in. But even that supposed stumbling
block has caveats: assuming improvement, both players may end up
approximating – if not fully realizing – those values. Even if
they do not, both contracts will most likely remain, for slightly
different reasons, eminently tradable: Lin’s because of his
global appeal and Asik’s because of his timelessly valuable skills
as an agile defending and rebounding center.
Coupled with the steady growth of Parsons, a second-year forward,
and a bench that potentially has plenty of talent, the Harden-Lin
Rockets are set up nicely for the future. A few more weeks of
lights-out offensive production, however, and the rest of the
league may wonder – with more than a little worry – whether
that future is now.

Since they are in different divisions, guess which game that would
have to be...
I'm praying for the opportunity.

If Lin keeps up with his talent in burning former teams that
overlooked or gave up on him, your wishes may very well come true.

Very nice and fair article. Houston Rockets is truly an exciting
team to watch now even if they don't have many superstars.
Harden is a great scorer and Lin is a very inspiring player. If both
of them can show their best, they will develop into a very
challeging team.they also have Parsons, PPT... But I really
don't like the coach who didn't give credits and trust to
players a lot. They need to trust players and gave them
encouragement when they have problems.
Parsons
Back to Basics Rob New York
Now imagine Carmelo Anthony on Houston and Jeremy Lin and
Chandler Parsons on the Knicks, with McHale coaching the Knicks
and Woodson coaching the Rockets. The Rockets would tank as
Anthony diminished the team. The Knicks ? Knowledgeable and
experienced followers of the NBA can dream, can't we ? It's
better than watching Anthony consistently take a lot of rushed,
poor shots every game.
不過為啥只要林和Parsons, 是因為他們是好友嗎 ^^;
