這是威廉‧吉布森出版於1986年的短篇集，到目前也是他唯一的短篇集，收錄了其早期創作，對於了解他的cyberpunk世界觀乃至寫作《Neuromancer》等的素材或許能提供一些有趣見解。這些作品總體上並沒有《Neuromancer》那麼難讀，劇情簡單，但依舊呈現出濃郁的頹廢世界風格跟可觀的文學筆觸。

"Johnny Mnemonic"在1995年改編為電影《捍衛機密》，但設定改變甚多。原本的故事就只是Johnny在運送「貨物」時被追殺，靠女打手Molly（後來在長篇《Neuromancer》與《Mona Lisa Overdrive》登場）幫忙，取出腦中加密資料反制雇主的故事。這是三篇裡面筆風最像《Neuromancer》的一篇，進入門檻也就稍高了。根據Gibson在本短篇集2002年新版序的說法，這篇是他的第二篇創作，寫於1977到1981年。這三篇究竟誰最早寫完，我找不到夠詳盡的資訊。

【Shin Nawakiri】George R.R. Martin和Stephen Colbert後面也聊到了不少有趣的事：遊戲、科幻小說、奇幻小說，etc. 例如，說到現代的科幻小說家， GGRM推薦奈及利亞裔女作家Nnedi Okorafor的《Who Fears Death》 ── HBO計畫改編中..GGRM製作！！（快寫書.. p_q）── 和James S. A. Corey（其實是兩位作者）的《The Expanse》。

SC：華盛頓郵報最近有篇文章指出，最近的奇幻與科幻作品與改編大都是關於覆滅與衰退。我成長時候的科幻小說 ── 那時是科幻的黃金時代 ── 由於啟蒙，大都是關於人類的完美、擴張。而最近的三十年，有好多末日、衰退的作品。你覺得為何會這樣呢？以及你自己的作品是樂觀的還是悲觀的？

GGRM：喔喔，這是個嚴肅的問題。近來我越來越悲觀了。我是在60、70年代的科幻黃金時代長大的。例如《基地》、《Future History》、《N-Space》等等的作品都有個類似的模板：人類會建立某種全球政府，不再有戰爭 ── 有些例子是剛經歷核戰浩劫，但人類學到教訓了。然後我們會探索太陽系，先去月球，然後去火星建立殖民地。會找到星際旅行的完美方法。科幻作家嘛，我們都知道愛因斯坦、相對論之類的東西，所以我們創造了超空間啦、曲速引擎啦、黑洞啦之類的到外太空的方法。我們會建立銀河帝國，有殖民地，人類文化和歷史會一直延續下去。當然為了小說，得要有些衝突，會有些社會有奇怪的習俗…但總之有個基本上的樂觀。

我也是這一份子。回頭看，那幾乎是信仰。人類登陸月球那年我 21 歲。他們找了Arthur C. Clarke、Isaac Asimov、Robert Heinlein⁽¹⁾等等科幻作家發表評論。Heinlein說我們不該用耶穌誕生為基準的西元紀年了，今年是人類種族的元年（Year One）、一個新的太空時代，是人類歷史最重要的事件。

我當時也這樣相信。甚至在那之前，讀50年代的書時，我就相信著我們會登陸月球，會登陸火星，然後，也許會花個五百年，但我們會到外太空。沒有料到的是，登陸月球之後…就停了。我們現在覺得月亮沒什麼意思，都是石頭。我們沒有要登陸火星，基本上拋棄了太空計畫。

現在，我看我們所處的世界，哎，真抱歉，但這比Westeros⁽²⁾還糟。（觀眾笑）

50年代也有許多反烏托邦作品，常常設定在全球核戰之後。50、60年代時我們非常擔心核戰。然後，我們不擔心核戰了，轉而擔心殭屍世界末日。現在突然間，核戰又變得可能了！（觀眾笑）核戰又回來了，我們搞不好真會有一場。我們也有了新的大流行傳染病要讓我們死光光。

以前也有很多關於這個的小說。但以前即使在這種小說裡面，核戰浩劫後，突變人類到處跑，還是會有一些好人會團結在一起，重建文明。還是有這種樂觀態度，即使背景那麼糟。現在這種樂觀還在嗎？對於氣候變遷能樂觀嗎？對於…如果普丁真的用核彈的話我們能做什麼？要做什麼？我是希望我有一隻龍可以騎著飛到克林姆林宮啦⁽³⁾，但是…（觀眾笑，鼓掌）…哈哈。

SC：剛剛你說，科幻小說某方面來說就像是你的信仰。不是宗教信仰，而是對未來的視野。現在你是不是正有信仰危機呢？

GGRM：我想是呢，我不知道。我還是認為…也許不會是美國人，也許要等三百年後，等到核戰和流行病之後，但我們會再回到月球、去火星、去木星的一些衛星。外太空好像越來越難了，距離那麼遠。我不相信曲速引擎、超空間之類的…

SC：那你覺得Starshot計畫⁽⁴⁾怎麼樣呢？那是很小的探測器，在太陽帆上，用雷射啟動，目的地是「比鄰星」（Proxima Centauri）。那是一顆紅矮星，有顆接近地球大小的行星⁽⁵⁾，上面可能有水。我想這個計畫應該快點開始，因為比鄰星離我們四光年遠，如果它們以四分之一光速的速度前進，16 年後就可以到達比鄰星，然後用光速傳訊息回到地球又花四年，二十年後我們就可以知道那顆行星的狀況。我們得現在（輕拍桌）就開始！

GGRM：Yeah，一起做吧！哈哈～

G.R.R. Martin有很多東西可說，聽他說這些事情，覺得很溫馨感動。主持人Stephen Colbert也是很有料的，對於兩人聊到的奇幻、科幻作者耳熟能詳，能引導GRRM說出許多有趣的事，才因此成就了一段好訪問。

《Who Fears Death》感覺會很好看…但是…好難取捨呀… XD (Anyway，GRRM要做什麼也不是我們能干涉的啦… XD）

20年後就可以知道那顆行星上有沒有生命嗎？Hmm… 真好奇…

- 科幻黃金時代不是30年代和更早嗎？60-70年代已經超晚了，Heinlein和AC克拉克這些人的想法也一直在變。

  不過他講得很對：大家對太空不再有興趣、太空時代結束了，或者應該說：太空的浪漫時代結束了。

草創期のパソコン通信にも興味を持ち、『月刊アスキー』でも長い間連載を行っていた。連載の中で、ペンネームの「遙」は二点之繞が正しいのだが、彼の執筆環境であるEPSON PCシリーズで入力した文字を、JIS83字形に対応していないPC-9800シリーズで表示させると、文字が存在しないことを表す「■」（通称：トウフ）が表示されてしまい、「高千穂■」（たかちほトウフ）になってしまったというエピソードを紹介している。同様に購入した機器が悉く不良品に当たったことも多く、CDアルバム『ダーティペア FLASH ユリ&ケイ 天使の休息』のドラマパートでネタにされている。

SF以外にも格闘技・プロレスに造詣が深く、そのペンネームはプロレスラーのザ・グレート・カブキがかつて名乗っていたリングネーム高千穂明久と、同じくプロレスラーの永源遙から採ったものである。代表作の一つ『ダーティペア』のネーミングは人気女子プロレスラーのビューティ・ペアから、所属組織WWWAの名称も全日本女子プロレスが管理する選手権の名称から採られている。この他、『無敵超人ザンボット3』の悪役、「キラー・ザ・ブッチャー」のキャラクター原案とネーミングも行った。アニメ『闘将ダイモス』では、主役ロボットの武器である三節棍やトンファーなどの作画指導として、自らが演武を行っている。
