In January, you will have a charming start to the year. I say that even though Mercury, the planet of communication, will be retrograde from January 5 to 25. I will give you the details on Mercury retrograde in a moment, but I feel the month will suit your current need for quiet contemplation, rest, and possibly time to enjoy a change of scene by traveling near or far.

You are an earth sign, and with so many planets this month in fellow earth signs - Mercury (Capricorn), Jupiter (Virgo), Pluto (Capricorn), plus the Sun, a star (Capricorn), and the new moon (also in Capricorn), living on planet Earth, this month will feel like a familiar, cozy place to be. The Sun and new moon will both be in Capricorn too, and that's the frosting on the cake. That new moon will fall at 19 degrees and appear on January 9. Once you get to that date, the majestic new moon will bring together all the sparkly elements brought to you by that host of planets orbiting in Capricorn and Virgo.

The new moon, Sun, and all of the Capricorn planets will stack up in your ninth house of long-distance travel and give you a need for adventure and something new to train your mind upon. If you cannot travel, this new moon will also accent other mind-expanding areas of life. I am enthusiastic because Jupiter will send a direct, golden beam to all those Capricorn planets in your ninth house and bring happiness galore. Jovial Jupiter's only mission is to make you happy, and he will never ask anything from you in return - he does his job very well indeed too. Jupiter's current focus, until September, will be to work on helping you find true love if you are single, or ways to enjoy the love that you have already built with someone special, say, if you are married. This month, if you are not dating, do your part by circulating as much as possible, and be open to a wide variety of types. If you set up too much barbed wire, with too tight a set of qualifiers for a new person you hope to meet, you will limit your chances of success. Jupiter is generous, kind, welcoming, embracing, and warm, and hopes you will be that way too.

This month, if you can take a trip with the one you love, do so immediately after the new moon arrives January 9. It's an ideal time to go, especially considering how demanding and exciting your career will become in February. Looking at your horoscope, however, it appears you presently need rest, or at the very least would benefit from a change of scene. It appears that any trip you take might have a financial goal to achieve, and that seems to be for work. If you do travel to an exciting city for work, add a day or two to your trip at your own expense, and have some fun sightseeing, have a spa treatment, or make time to see a friend in your destination city. Pluto will be conjunct this new moon, giving it high-octane power, so this suggests a powerful client may need to see you face-to-face. If it turns out you will be traveling for work, be prepared for some frustrations in finding accord on several points. Mercury retrograde won't help - in fact, it may be that the other party will not understand the basis of one or more of your points, so make an extra effort to be very clear.

This new moon does have its difficulties, but because you are not a cardinal sign (but rather, you are a fixed sign, belonging to the family of Taurus-Scorpio, Aquarius-Leo), you won't experience the obstacles that certain members of the cardinal signs of Aries, Libra, Cancer, or Capricorn will feel from surprise-a-minute Uranus. (Within those Cardinal signs listed, it will be those with 17-20 degrees prominent in their charts. In other words, those readers born near the 9th day of their respective months will feel some tension.) You have had your share of tension but have steadily moved away from those days, since that trend ended last September, dear Taurus. With Saturn no longer opposing your Sun, you are freer than ever, able to move freely at will without feeling contained by obligations.

This same new moon may bring on different opportunities, far beyond the chance to travel. You may be choosing university classes for your next semester at the university for graduate or undergraduate studies. It would be a prime time to choose those that interest you or that would allow you to work toward attaining your degree. If you need to brush up on changes in your industry, the new moon of January 9 will help you find seminars that would be perfect for you to attend.

Four heavenly bodies in Capricorn suggest you may be interested in one of two areas: history or historical documents, or objects that have value from the past, such as estate jewelry or old coins, valuable watches, or rare stamps. Taurus also excels in finance, and in the related fields of insurance, stock market investment, hedge funds, venture capital, real estate, agriculture, commodities, and the like. These financial and property-oriented areas might interest you now. If you are a broadcasting or publishing bureau chief, a journalist, writer, or editor, you may be working on an economic outlook for a TV segment, magazine article, or Internet piece this month, especially after the new moon, January 9.

If your birthday falls on May 10, plus or minus four days, you will benefit from this new moon. The same is true if you have Taurus rising 19 degrees, or similarly, if you have a natal planet in Virgo, Capricorn, or Taurus at or within five degrees of 19 degrees.

If you have legal matters to bring up, or a patent or trademark to file, you may be ready to do so, but with Mercury retrograde I feel you would do best to go over the paperwork you want to file, and ferret out any tiny flaws. It seems a few do exist, and you can find them now. Don't file until next month, after the new moon February 9, if you feel waiting would work with your timetable.

The middle of the month brings three beautiful days, all strung together like pearls on a necklace: January 12, 13, and 14. Each day is a standout, and the middle date, January 13, will be the best one of all. Here is the scoop:

On January 12, a Tuesday, your ruling planet, Venus, will receive an exciting, silvery beam from Uranus. On this day, you may receive a sum of money unexpectedly, out of the blue, and it will be related to your growing career and the fine work you have been doing. Your career status may rise as well, so all around, this day will be special in every way.

On January 13, you will come to your very best day of the month, for Jupiter, giver of gifts and luck, will be in perfect "trine" aspect (one of the most harmonious aspects possible - wow!). Currently, at the time of this aspect, the Sun will be in your travel / higher education / media and legal house, while Jupiter will be in your fifth house of creativity and love. Distant travel and love will go together like salt and pepper on this glorious day. Yet there are more possibilities. You can also use this day to present your thesis, take a qualifying exam, send an application to a college, or to send a query letter to an editor. You might have an interview with an officer about immigration or citizenship or concerning a green card or visa. This day will bring favor from a VIP, and help you show others the depths and range of your creativity. Additionally, you may also have a highly romantic episode on this day, especially if you find you are on a trip with your one-and-only that would be sensational.

On the following day, January 14, Mercury in Capricorn and Jupiter in Virgo will be in ideal sync. The problem is, the moon will be void of course during almost the entire day. This day will be one that would ordinarily be ideal for signing a contract, for being introduced to someone new to date, consulting a fertility doctor, showing off your creative ideas, and or to possibly finding ways to generate more income. All these types of ventures can be done the day before, on January 13.

When the moon is void of course for long periods, like it will be on January 14, it's best to avoid the day. It means the moon is resting and not in conversation with any other planets. This leaves the moon ineffectual, and to make progress you need a peppy moon to help things along. So simply look at the list of activities that would be ideal for you to do on January 14, and move your actions to January 13. Lucky you, January 13 will be a stellar day as discussed above. Keep in mind that an aspect is strongest before it hits mathematical peak, so the day prior is always a good day to act, as the energy is still building toward that peak. This is why I feel January 14's special activities can be highly successful if done January 13.

Now let's turn to another big moment of the month: The full moon in Leo 3 degrees on January 23, a Saturday, sure to focus you intently on your house of home and family. This could be a wonderful day to see a home-related project come to fruition, or to entertain friends at a party at your apartment or house. Mars will be in hard angle to the full moon, and because Mars will be in your partnership sector, you may have problems getting your mate or steady partner to agree with the plan you have in mind for this weekend. Mars is not in tight mathematical position, but a little wide, which may indicate you can move your partner's position if you discuss things with a spirit of patience and persuasion.

All month you will be focused on your romantic or business partner, for it appears you have lots to discuss and to do together. I say that because Mars will be in your house of commitment, which rules all contractual relationships from marriage (or living together in an established long-term way) or in business as a partnership, or any type of one-on-one-collaboration. If you own a small business and are about to do a close joint project with a big company, even though the other party is huge, that relationship could still be considered a partnership too. If you regularly represent people, the way a lawyer would do, or an agent or publicist would do, you will be very consumed with a project you are doing with that person, from now until March 5.

One of your best days to interact with your partner, if you need to generate creative ideas, would be January 18 when Mars and Neptune will be beautifully oriented toward each other. Present a picture of the future to your partner in vivid terms, quite cinematically - you will go far in finding accord on a project dear to you if you do.

You will begin to see events move forward quickly after January 25, although I would like you not to jump on January 25 as a day for action, but to allow as much space as possible from that date that Mercury goes direct. If you are about to make a very important initiation, then I would suggest you wait until Mercury is fully direct and back to former strength, February 14-15. If you can't wait that long, the time just after the new moon, February 9, will be great too. If you simply can't wait to sign papers and so forth, do so in the first week of February.

You have a lot of emphasis on the home this month, but I would ask you not to buy new electronic items with the gift card you might have been given over the holidays. Wait. It is never wise to buy electronics or any expensive furniture when Mercury is out of phase. You will not enjoy your item nearly as much as you expect - sit tight and see what happens. You will be glad you waited.

The holidays may be over, but it appears you need a holiday from the holiday. With your sector of travel packed with heavenly bodies - the Sun, Mercury, Pluto, and the new moon January 9 - you may board your magic carpet to journey to a foreign land. A new moon sets up a trend that can last for weeks, so circle on your calendar January 13 as a sensational time for taking a trip to fan the fires of romance. Love will be fueled by travel, thanks to Jupiter, the good fortune planet, in sync with the Sun. On the following day, January 14, Mercury, the communication and travel planet, will be in conversation with Jupiter too.

Mercury will be retrograde January 5 to January 25, so if you do travel, choose a locale that you used to visit in childhood and have not seen since - reminiscing will be fun. Money seems tight this month, so it's also possible that your trip would be for business, and if so, you would still enjoy the change of scene and find that you are on the same page with the client you travel to meet.

Your yearning to expand your horizons this month will be powerfully strong, and you will be hungry to learn, debate, and grow intellectually. For this reason, if you cannot travel, you may decide to head to a university campus to sign up for classes this semester that will put you closer to an advanced degree. Or, opt to do intensive research for a publishing or broadcasting project that would expose you to a subject new to you. You aren't interested in doing the same old things - this is the month to learn by working on new subject matter.

Your attention will switch to your home within four days of the full moon in Leo January 23. Your lease may be up and you need to sign a new one, or it may be time to sign or put a winning bid on a new house. If you can wait for Mercury to normalize its orbit after January 25 before you sign papers or give a verbal response, you will be all the better for it. (Mercury will start to retrograde January 5.) As you approach January's end, you may be moving house, wrapping up a renovation, or hosting guests at your home over the weekend of January 23-24. Jupiter will be amazingly helpful, so if you are working on a decorating project, browse your favorite shops, for you are likely to spy a handsome piece of furniture that would be the perfect addition for the room you had in mind.
