David Fizdale may not be without a job much longer.
According to Sporting News' Mitch Lawrence, the Phoenix Suns are targeting the former Memphis Grizzlies head coach to replace interim coach Jay Triano. However, Lawrence also reported the Los Angeles Lakers are interested in Fizdale, even though Luke Walton still has three years remaining on his contract.
Phoenix fired head coach Earl Watson just three games into the season. The Suns were 0-3 on the court, and off it, there was drama involving guard Eric Bledsoe, who was ultimately traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. Watson was canned in the midst of the dysfunction, with Triano taking over under the interim tag.
Things have not gotten much better since the coaching change, however. At 18-44, Phoenix owns the worst record in the NBA.
Memphis gave the 43-year-old his first shot at being an NBA coach. Fizdale led the Grizzlies to a 43-39 record and a playoff appearance in his lone full season with the organization. The team was just 7-12 this season under his command, and his rocky relationship with star Marc Gasol likely played a role in his departure.
For a variety of reasons, Fizdale didn't work out in Memphis—but he still appears to be generating interest despite not much of a track record as an NBA head coach.
Of course, perhaps Phoenix and Los Angeles have LeBron James in mind when considering Fizdale:
Whether or not either of those teams have a chance to land the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar in free agency this summer doesn't really matter, although his connection to James certainly helps Fizdale's cause.
Fizdale was the fall guy in Memphis as the team got off to a disappointing start. Fortunately for him, he could soon land another head coaching gig.
