Taiwanese P League+ franchise New Taipei Kings appear to be on the verge of
joining the East Asia Super League (EASL) in place of the Bay Area Dragons.

The league abruptly sacked its entire playing staff last Friday during an
online meeting, leaving the eight-team league, which is expected to tip off
on October 11, one team short.

EASL officials declined to comment at the time, saying they would make an
announcement on Tuesday, but sources with knowledge of the development told
the Post that news surrounding the Kings’ possible involvement began to
circulate about 10 days ago.

“I first heard about it around August 25 or 26,” the source said. “The
Dragons were supposed to play in a tournament in Xiamen alongside the Kings.”

That tournament, which started on Saturday and runs until the end of this
week, also featured another P League+ team in Hsinchu Lioneers, along with
CBA outfit Nanjing Monkey Kings, Cape Town Tigers and 10 Ten Sports & Ent –
a team formed by NBA free agents.

When asked, the Kings’ general manager, James Mao, did not deny his side
could be about to join the league, only saying “we do not have any details
regarding the participation in the EASL”.

The Kings, who finished top in the regular P League+ season, lost 4-2 to
two-time defending champions and eventual winners Taipei Fubon Braves in the
play-offs.

Star guard Joseph Lin, brother of NBA sensation Jeremy, had joined the Kings
at the start of the season. Jeremy Lin has previously expressed a desire that
the siblings play together and is a free agent after leaving Kaohsiung 17LIVE
Steelers during the off-season.

The Braves are the only Taiwanese team in the EASL. If the Kings were to join
them, the regional competition would have two teams each from the P League+,
Japan’s B League, the Korean Basketball League and the Philippines
Basketball Association.
