Since the Rockets apparently had trouble getting interested in beating the
league’s worst team, they added a degree of difficulty to force themselves
to at least often pay attention.

The Rockets spent the night as if determined to see how close they could keep
the Washington Wizards and still take the win without too much last-minute
stress. They opened occasional double-digit leads just to be sure they still
could, but let them slip away to keep things interesting, to keep the
scoreboard relevant.

Finally, with 3 ½ minutes left, the Rockets put together one last scoring
burst that ended any lingering doubt, as the Rockets finished off the
Wizards, 99-93, Wednesday at Toyota Center.

With Washington within four, the Rockets got their offense in gear long
enough to take the win. Jeremy Lin broke free on a backdoor cut to take a
Patrick Patterson pass to a layup before Patterson got on a brief roll.
Chandler Parsons took a long pass from Lin to a fast break layup before
putting in consecutive layups, giving him 18 points, with 11 in the fourth
quarter. James Harden sealed it with a pair of free throws for a five-point
lead, giving him 31 points.

The Rockets moved to 7-1 against the Eastern Conference, with their next four
also against Eastern Conference teams. But they will step up in class
considerably with Friday’s game against the Celtics before the road trip to
Toronto and New York.

The Rockets had thrown away all of a 14-point lead in the second quarter, but
after a slow start to the second half, they put together a 15-2 run and
seemed in command again.

They weren’t. Just as they had in the second quarter, the Rockets carelessly
gave away the bulk of that lead with turnovers and a pair of missed free
throws. As with the end of the second quarter, Toney Douglas shined up that
mess. After hitting a buzzer-beater from 50 feet to end the first half,
Douglas ended the third quarter with a jumper to send the Rockets to the
fourth quarter with a six-point lead.

The Wizards arrived with the league’s worst record and for much of the first
half, did not look as good as their 3-15 record. The Rockets, however, built
a 14-point lead, then enjoyed a long second-quarter nap.

In some ways, the Rockets were not playing very well to begin with. They didn
’t have to, with the Wizards as usual missing every variety of open shot and
Harden scoring so easily, that he alone kept pace. In his 9 ½ first-quarter
minutes, Harden made 6 of 7 shots to score 17 points. The Wizards made 8 of
22 shots for their 17 points.

In the second quarter, however, Harden sat and the Rockets offense went with
him. Even when he returned, he could not finish the drives he made so easily
in the first quarter, missing his three shots of the quarter.

The Rockets’ greater problem, however, was that they spent the quarter
carelessly turning the ball over. They had nine turnovers in the quarter
while making just 6 of 18 shots. The Wizards did not do much – they made
just 37.5 percent of their shots – but they came back to tie the game by
default.

The Rockets only escaped the first half with a lead when Douglas nailing his
running 3-point heave at the buzzer.

The Rockets might have gotten away with blowing off the second quarter, but
they had managed to play down to the competition long enough that they
struggled to find their way back.
