Former motor racing world champion Michael Schumacher has suffered head injuries in a skiing accident.

It happened while the 44-year-old was skiing in the French resort of Meribel in the popular Three Valleys ski area.

It is understood he was wearing a helmet when he hit his head on a rock, and that he did not lose consciousness.

He has been flown by helicopter to Grenoble Hospital.
The duty manager at the hospital told Sky News that Schumacher had been admitted and is undergoing a scan.

He said he had no further information and that ''his injuries are being examined at the moment''.

Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director general of Meribel ski resort, told radio station RMC: "For the moment I don't know the severity of the injury.

"The gendarmes are at the scene investigating how the accident happened.
"He was taken by helicopter to Grenoble Hospital. I don't know if it happened on piste or off piste."

Schumacher owns a chalet in Meribel and is a keen skiier.

The German driver retired from Formula 1 for a second time in December last year.

He made a disappointing return to the sport after making his comeback in 2010, managing only one podium finish during his three years with Mercedes.

Alors qu'il faisait du ski dans la station de Méribel, en Savoie, le sportif aurait fait une chute alors qu'il était seul et aurait ensuite été transporté à l'hôpital. Selon Europe 1, il serait victime d'un traumatisme crânien.

"Il a chuté à 11h07 en hors-piste à Méribel", a expliqué à RMC Sport le directeur de la station, Christophe Gernigon-Lecomte. Il portait un casque et a tapé contre un rocher alors qu'il skiait en hors-piste.

"Il était choqué, un peu agité, mais conscient. C'est peut-être un traumatisme crânien mais ce n'est pas très grave", a par ailleurs assuré le directeur de la station.

Schumacher, qui a annoncé fin 2012 officiellement mettre fin à sa carrière en Formule 1, a remporté la plupart des record de cette discipline automobile et été sacré champion du monde en 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001,

2002, 2003 et 2004.
