6:57in welcoming Apple CEO Tim Cook hello
7:11MIT thank you congratulations class of
7:19seventeen I especially want to thank
7:22chairman Maillard president rive
7:25distinguished faculty trustees and
7:28members of the class of 1967 it's a
7:33privilege to be with you today with your
7:35families and your friends on such an
7:39amazing important day MIT and Apple
7:44share so much
7:45we both love hard problems we love the
7:48search for new ideas and we especially
7:52love finding those ideas the really big
7:55ones the ones that can change the world
7:58I know MIT has a proud tradition of
8:02pranks or as you would call them hacks
8:06and you've had pulled off some pretty
8:10great ones over the years I'll never
8:13figure out how MIT students since that
8:16Mars rover to the Krusty Oval or put a
8:20propeller beanie on the Great Dome or
8:23how you've obviously taken over the
8:26president's Twitter account
8:30I can tell college students are behind
8:34it because most of the tweets happen at
8:353 a.m. I'm really happy to be here today
8:43is about celebration and you have so
8:46much to be proud of as you leave here to
8:51start the next leg of your journey in
8:53life there will be days where you will
8:57ask yourself where is all this going
9:00what is the purpose what is my purpose
9:05I'll be honest I asked myself that same
9:09question and it took me nearly 15 years
9:13to answer it maybe by talking about my
9:17journey today I can save you some time
9:22the struggle for me started early on in
9:25high school I thought I'd discover my
9:29life's purpose when I could answer that
9:31age-old question what do you want to be
9:33when you grow up
9:34nope in college
9:38I thought I would discover it when I
9:40could answer what's your major
9:42not quiet I thought that maybe I
9:46discover it when I found a good job then
9:50I thought I just needed to get a few
9:51promotions that didn't work either
9:54I kept convincing myself that it was
9:59just over the horizon around the next
10:03corner nothing worked and it was really
10:09tearing me apart part of me kept pushing
10:13ahead to the next achievement and the
10:17other part kept asking is this all there
10:21is I went to grad school at Duke looking
10:25for the answer
10:26I tried meditation I sought guidance and
10:30religion
10:31I read great philosophers and authors
10:34and in a moment of youthful and
10:37discretion I might even have
10:42experimented
10:43with a Windows PC and obviously that
10:49didn't work after countless twists and
10:54turns at last 20 years ago my search
11:00brought me to Apple at the time the
11:02company was struggling to survive Steve
11:05Jobs had just returned to Apple and had
11:08launched the think different campaign he
11:11wanted to empower the crazy ones The
11:13Misfits the rebels the troublemakers the
11:15round pegs in the square holes to do
11:18their best work if we could just do that
11:22Steve knew we could really change the
11:26world before that moment I had never met
11:31a leader with such passion or
11:33encountered a company with such a clear
11:36and compelling purpose to serve humanity
11:41it was just that simple serve humanity
11:47and it was in that moment after 15 years
11:52of surging something clicked I finally
11:58felt aligned aligned with a company that
12:02brought together challenging
12:03cutting-edge work with a higher purpose
12:06aligned with a leader who believed that
12:09technology which didn't exist yet could
12:12reinvent tomorrow's world aligned with
12:17myself and my own deep need to serve
12:21something greater of course at that
12:24moment I didn't know all of that I was
12:28just grateful to have that psychological
12:31burden lifted but with the help of
12:35hindsight my breakthrough makes a lot
12:38more sense I was never going to find my
12:41purpose working someplace without a
12:43clear sense of purpose of its own
12:47Steven Apple freed me to throw my whole
12:50self into
12:52my work to embrace their mission and
12:55make it my own how can I serve humanity
13:01this is life's biggest and most
13:06important question when you work towards
13:10something greater than yourself you find
13:13meaning you find purpose so the question
13:17I hope you will carry forward from here
13:20is how will you serve humanity the good
13:27news is since you're here today you're
13:30already on a great track at MIT you've
13:33learned how much power science and
13:35technology had to change the world for
13:37the better
13:39thanks to discoveries made right here
13:42billions of people are leading healthier
13:45more productive more fulfilling lives
13:47and if we are ever going to solve some
13:51of the hardest problems still facing the
13:52world today everything from cancer to
13:55climate change to educational inequality
13:58then technology will help us do it but
14:05technology alone isn't the solution and
14:10sometimes it's even part of the problem
14:16last year I had the chance to meet with
14:19Pope Francis it was the most incredible
14:23meeting of my life this is a man who has
14:27spent more time comforting the afflicted
14:29in slums than he has with heads of state
14:33this may surprise you but he knew an
14:38unbelievable amount about technology it
14:42was obvious to me that he had thought
14:44deeply about it its opportunities its
14:48risks its morality what he said to me at
14:53that meeting what he preached really was
14:56on a topic we care a lot about it
15:00but he expressed a shared concern in a
15:04powerful new way
15:06never has humanity had such power over
15:10itself yet nothing ensures that it will
15:16be used wisely he has said technology
15:22today is integral to almost all aspects
15:26of our lives and most of the time it's a
15:30force for good and yet the potential
15:34adverse consequences are spreading
15:35faster and cutting deeper than ever
15:37before threats to our security threats
15:41to our privacy fake news and social
15:44media that becomes anti-social sometimes
15:50the very technology that is meant to
15:53connect us divides us technology is
15:59capable of doing great things but it
16:04doesn't want to do great things it
16:08doesn't want anything that part takes
16:13all of us it takes our values in our
16:18commitment to our families and our
16:20neighbors and our communities our love
16:23of beauty and belief that all of our
16:26fates are interconnected our decency our
16:30kindness I'm not worried about
16:35artificial intelligence giving computers
16:38the ability to think like humans I'm
16:41more concerned about people thinking
16:44like computers without values or
16:47compassion without concern for
16:50consequences that is what we need you to
16:55help us guard against because of silence
17:00because if science is a search in the
17:02darkness then the humanities are a
17:05candle
17:06shows us where we've been and the danger
17:09that lies ahead as Steve once said
17:14technology alone is not enough it is
17:19technology married with the liberal arts
17:22married with the humanities that make
17:24our hearts a when you keep people at the
17:29center of what you do it can have an
17:32enormous impact it means an iPhone that
17:37allows a blind person to run a marathon
17:39it means an Apple watch that catches a
17:42heart condition before it becomes a
17:44heart attack it means an iPad that helps
17:48a child with autism connect with his or
17:52her world in short it means technology
17:57infused with your values making progress
18:02possible for everyone whatever you do in
18:07your life and whatever we do at Apple we
18:12must infuse it with the humanity that
18:15each of us is born with that
18:19responsibility is immense but so is the
18:24opportunity I'm optimistic because I
18:29believe in your generation your passion
18:32your journey to serve humanity we are
18:37all counting on you there is so much out
18:42there conspiring to make you cynical the
18:46Internet has enabled so much and
18:49empowered so many but it can also be a
18:53place where basic rules of decency are
18:57suspended and pettiness and negativity
18:59thrive don't let that noise knock you
19:04off course don't get caught up in the
19:07trivial aspects of life don't listen to
19:11trolls
19:12for God's sake don't become one measure
19:17your impact on humanity not in likes but
19:22in the lives you touch not in popularity
19:26but in the people you serve I found that
19:31my life got bigger when I stopped caring
19:33what other people thought about me
19:36you will find yours will to stay focused
19:41on what really matters there will be
19:46times when you resolve to serve humanity
19:48will be tested
19:50be prepared people will try to convince
19:54you that you should keep your empathy
19:56out of your career don't accept this
20:00false premise at a shareholders meeting
20:06a few years of back someone questioned
20:11apples investment and focus on the
20:13environment he asked me to pledge that
20:16Apple would only invest in green
20:18initiatives that could be justified with
20:21the return on investment I tried to be
20:24diplomatic I pointed out that Apple does
20:27many things like accessibility features
20:29for those with disabilities that don't
20:32rely on an ROI we do these things
20:35because they're the right thing to do
20:37and protecting the environment is a
20:40critical example he wouldn't let it go
20:44and I got my blood up so I told him if
20:49you can't accept our position you
20:52shouldn't own Apple stock when your
20:57condensed that your cause is right have
21:01the courage to take a stand if you see a
21:05problem or an injustice recognize that
21:08no one will fix it but you as you go
21:13forward today
21:15use your minds and hands and your hearts
21:18to build something bigger than
21:20yourselves always remember there is no
21:25idea bigger than this as dr. Martin
21:29Luther King said all life is
21:32interrelated we are all bound together
21:35into a single garment of destiny if you
21:39keep that idea at the forefront of all
21:43that you do if you choose to live your
21:46lives at that intersection between
21:48technology and the people it serves if
21:51you strive to create the best give the
21:54best do the best for everyone not just
21:57for some then today all of humanity has
22:03good cause for hope thank you very much
22:07and congratulations class of 2017
22:11[Applause]
22:37thank you Tim that was terrific
