Problem Statement: The palm oil industry generates an abundance of oil palm biomass such as the mesocarp fibre, shell, empty fruit bunch (EFB), frond, trunk and palm oil mill effluent (POME).

The higher treatment temperature has led to lower bio-oil yields and higher quality liquid fuels. The highest calorific value of the bio-oil obtained was 21.41 MJ/kg.

However, one of most serious problems of the fast pyrol-ysis of EFB is the high amount of ash that it produces. Thishigh ash content hinders the fast pyrolysis reaction, resultingin a low yield and bad quality of the biocrude oil. Effortshave been made to reduce the ash in the EFB and to evalu-ate the yield and characteristics of the resulting biocrude oil[4]. However, the biocrude oil mixtures exhibited an unex-pected inhomogeneity due to the presence of solid residuesand tar droplets.

Slow Pyrolysis of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches for Biochar Production and Characterisation

The EFB feedstock with the lowest ash content (1.60 mf wt%) produced the lowest biochar yield percentage (23.05 wt %) with the highest fixed carbon percentage (88.34 mf wt%).

Reduction of the EFB feedstock ash content from 5.29 to 1.60 mf wt% produced significant changes in the morphological structure of the resulting biochar.

The maximum BET surface area of the EFB biochar, obtained from the EFB feedstock with 2.21 mf wt% ash content, was found to be 11.1200 m2/g.
