Using Bio-oil Produced by Biomass Pyrolysis as Diesel Fuel - Energy & Fuels (ACS Publications)

This study evaluated the effect of biomass (soybean oil, eucalyptus sawdust, and coffee grounds) pyrolysis oil on the formulation of diesel fuels.

Additionally, particulate matter emissions are reduced significantly by up to 30% when compared with the base fuel.

Caffeinated Cars

Bio-bean has developed a technique to process waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuel for vehicles and biomass pellets that can heat homes. It gets grounds from wholesale instant coffee manufacturers and coffee-waste aggregators — businesses that usually pay to send their waste to landfills, incinerators or anaerobic digestion plants. Bio-bean sells its carbon-neutral clean fuel to local businesses and aims to eventually help power the same coffee shops that supplied the grounds. Starbucks is developing a space-age coffee grounds recycling method in Japan. The Seattle-based company has teamed up with a contact lens manufacturer to reuse coffee grounds from 136 of its Japanese coffee shops.

This is how it works: the chain's refrigerated lorries collect the grounds from Starbucks stores – while a press release mentions 136, a spokesperson tells Guardian Sustainable Business it's "around 100" – during their daily delivery routes and bring them to a distribution centre. From there, other lorries bring them to a recycling centre, where they're converted into feed for dairy cows using a new lactic acid fermentation technique.

This is the hi-tech bit: the lactic acid fermentation technique, developed by Japanese contact lens manufacturer Menicon as part of its experimentation with new contact lens materials, makes the coffee grounds more nutritious than if they were simply used as compost. Starbucks then feeds the fermented coffee grounds to its dairy cows.

Starbucks's spokesperson, meanwhile, says that the company has "no immediate plans to expand the lactic acid programme beyond Japan", but points out that its US stores give away coffee grounds to home-gardening customers.

Many of the CFRP recycling projects have centered around a partial pyrolysis process, where the resin matrix is burned off with limited oxygen. Carbon fibres processed in this way retain 90% or more of their original mechanical properties. This process has been commercialized by recycled carbon fibre (RCF). Variants of pyrolysis have been trailed in several places around the world for both glass and carbon fibre composites. A pyrolysis process for GFRP recycling was developed at the University of Leeds in a method where the fluid pyrolysis products can be used as fuel.
