Tangent from today's Dev Bio class: Human eggs pop out the ovaries and travel to the fallopian tube. But sometimes they get shot out weird and miss their target :(((

Instead of going into the tube, they float around the body, lost & alone, but then sometimes sperm will find the egg anyway, even if it's sitting over by the liver or something. The egg'll just be hanging out, and the sperm will swim up and fertilize it.

Both sperm and egg are very CLEARLY in unsupervised territory. You might be wondering how a body could lose an egg in the first place. I mean, aren't there like walls and stuff to keep it on the right track?

Every time a woman ovulates, an egg will cross a small yet terrifying stretch from the ovary to the fallopian tube that isn't part of the reproductive tract. It's just fluid. The same exact fluid that's keeping all your organs moist.

Why nature didn't hook those two up better I cannot say, but here we are.

So the egg is hanging out by the liver or kidneys or intestines or wherever, and the sperm will find and fertilize it. But it can't develop, right? I mean, a baby needs a womb! That fertile field of the woman's uterus! Right? RIGHT??? Nope.

Turns out, embryos can implant basically anywhere. They just cozy on up to some tissue and get to work.

So our little 'bro now has it's earliest placenta-like cells (called the trophectoderm) worming their way into the liver. This, you may think, is a problem. And you'd be right. But here's what's remarkable.

Even with the embryo TOTALLY outside the uterus, it can still, with solid luck and expert medical care, make it to full term. Babies have grown off the intestines, for example, like this one:

And because human embryos can implant anywhere in the body, and be brought to full term outside the uterus (with great risk), there is really no reason...[do you see where I'm going with this??]

men can't get pregnant.

Also, females, uterine birth controls like IUDs do not necessarily protect you against an intestine baby. Cuz, you know, it's on the intestines.

The outgoing Trump Administration is moving to complete a last-minute oil lease sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, as the Interior Department set a process in motion to approve a new seismic survey of nearly half a million acres of the refuge's coastal plain.

The proposed survey involves hundreds of miles of seismic exploration "trails" that would result from 90,000-pound seismic vehicles crisscrossing the fragile tundra. It would scar the landscape and threaten denning polar bears. Such a proposal typically requires a lengthy environmental review, but the administration appears poised to fast-track the process in order to get seismic testing under way before the Biden Administration takes over.
