Norfolk County Council beats Apple in £385m iPhone row
Apple has agreed to pay $490m (£385m) to settle a lawsuit led by Norfolk County Council.
The class action alleged the tech giant's boss, Tim Cook, defrauded shareholders by covering up lower demand for iPhones in China.
Norfolk Council said a pension fund it administered lost money as a result of Mr Cook's actions.
In a statement, the Norfolk Pension Fund said it was "very proud of this recovery for investors."
The statement continued: "We are mindful that we are stewards of pensions relied upon by thousands of families and individuals.
"When and where it's warranted, we will take decisive action to recover losses when our participants' investments are harmed by fraud."
The BBC has approached Apple for comment.
The class action lawsuit - meaning it is on behalf of a group of claimants - centred around comments made by Apple's chief executive Tim Cook.
He told investors on 1 November 2018 that there was "sales pressure" in some countries but he "would not put China in that category."
However, two months later, on 2 January 2019, Apple downgraded its quarterly revenue forecast, citing tensions between China and the US - leading to a sharp drop in Apple's share price.
Within that two-month window, reports emerged that Apple had told its top smartphone assemblers to "halt plans for additional production lines" for the recently released iPhone XR.
The claimants in this case were all investors who had bought shares between November 2018 and January 2019.
They said they lost money because they had been falsely reassured by Mr Cook's comments in November.
The case was originally brought against Apple and Mr Cook by the US city of Roseville. Norfolk Council, which administers the £4.9bn Norfolk Pension Fund, took over the lawsuit as lead plaintiff in 2020.
Apple had fought the litigation, and a trial was scheduled for later this year. This preliminary settlement - filed on Friday with the U.S. District Court in Oakland, California - should mean that will no longer happen, however it still requires approval by a judge.
It is not known what portion of the settlement Norfolk County Council will receive.
Apple posted $97 billion of net income in the last fiscal year. The pay-out equals a little under two days of profit for what is one of the world's wealthiest companies.

節氣「春分」是哪一天？
春分落在每年國曆的3月20日或21日或22日，2024年的春分則是3月20日星期三，此時太陽在黃道上運行至0度。春分是二十四節氣中的第四個節氣，也是春天的第四個節氣。
春分是什麼意思？
《月令七十二候集解》：中說「二月中，分者半也，此當九十日之半，故謂之分。秋同義。」《春秋繁露· 陰陽出入上下篇》說：「春分者，陰陽相半也，故晝夜均而寒暑平。」春分和秋分都是太陽直射赤道，白天和黑夜一樣長的日子，不僅晝夜平分，也平分了整個季節的90天。過了春分後太陽開始向北回歸線移動，北半球的白天越來越長，黑夜越來越短，直到夏至則成為白天最長的一天。
世界各地文明都相當重視春分節氣，中國古代會在春分舉辦重要祭典，日本更把春分定為國定假日，而在伊朗、阿富汗、烏茲別克則是將春分作為新年的開始。
春分有哪些諺語？
春分落雨落到清明
春分期間多會是下雨天，甚至還會一直下到清明節。
春分無雨劃耕田，春分有雨是豐年
春分節氣對應到農業是很好的播種與耕作時機，春雨灌溉會讓農作物欣欣向榮，五穀豐收。古人認為春分日當天如果沒下雨，接下來春天的雨水都有可能不足，造成沒辦法進行耕田、播種的情況；反之只要春分日下雨，就表示今年的雨水會十分充足，並且會讓農民們得到大豐收。
春分有風發，郎中盡可殺；春分無雨下，郎中笑哈哈
如果春分颳風下雨，可提醒大家注意氣候變化並預防疾病，醫生生意就清淡；若此日不下雨，表示節候亂了秩序，人們容易生病，醫生便大發利市笑哈哈。
春分前冷，春分後暖；春分前暖，春分後冷
意思是春分前天氣冷，春分後就會開始熱；而春分前天氣熱的話，春分後會就會春暖乍寒。
春分的習俗與禁忌有哪些？
立蛋
有別於比較多人熟知的端午立蛋，春分立蛋的習俗則是因為這一天南北半球晝夜平均，地軸呈現66.5的傾斜角度，和繞太陽公轉的平面正好處於相對平衡的狀態，所以立蛋比較容易成功。據說成功將蛋立起來就可以帶來一整年的好運唷！
吃春菜
在中國嶺南地區會在春分時食用一種名為「春菜」的野莧菜，而在台灣則是轉化為春天盛產的當令蔬菜，例如甘藍、洋蔥、花椰菜、萵苣、韭菜、春筍、青椒、豌豆筍子、高麗菜⋯⋯等等。
不吃太熱或太冰的食物
由於春分是陰陽相半的節氣，要特別注意飲食均衡，少吃過於燥熱和進補食物，而過於冰冷寒涼的飲品、甜品，也盡量少吃，以免冷熱交替造成腸胃不適。
送春牛／摸春牛
傳統農耕社會在春分時會用紅紙或黃紙，畫上二十四節氣與農人耕田的圖案，再把這些「春牛圖」送到別人家裡，口裡說著吉祥話，直到主人給予打賞，討個新春好彩頭。現在在部分廟宇還會在立春或元宵節時，推出「摸春牛」的習俗活動，像是台南土城聖母廟，每年立春都設有春牛供信眾摸，相傳只要心誠參拜，摸摸春牛就能討吉利，而且觸摸部位不同，福份也會有差異。
春分是春季的中分點，代表春天已過了一半，此時陽氣升發快速，氣溫明顯上升。中醫師蘇玟今表示，春分時節冷熱空氣交替頻繁，造成氣候不穩定、溫差變化大，而我們的肺是最先接觸到外面空氣的器官，所以就容易導致肺氣不順，引發上呼吸道的問題如:感冒、流感、急慢性支氣管炎、慢性鼻炎、過敏性鼻炎等等。建議平時可以喝一點薑茶保養，分量不用太多，在熱開水裡放一片薑沖泡即可，幫助我們的呼吸道增加禦寒的能力。

The Remembrance Day bombing (also known as the Enniskillen bombing or Poppy Day massacre) took place on 8 November 1987 in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. A Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) bomb exploded near the town's war memorial (cenotaph) during a Remembrance Sunday ceremony, which was being held to commemorate British military war dead. Eleven people (10 civilians and a police officer) were initially killed, many of them elderly. A twelfth man was fatally wounded, entering a coma from which he would later die, and 63 were injured. The IRA said it had made a mistake and that its target had been the British soldiers parading to the memorial.
The bombing was strongly condemned by all sides and undermined support for the IRA and Sinn Féin. It also facilitated the passing of the Extradition Act, which made it easier to extradite IRA suspects from the Republic of Ireland to the United Kingdom. Loyalist paramilitaries responded to the bombing with revenge attacks on Catholic civilians.
The bombing is often seen as a turning point in the Troubles, an incident that shook the IRA "to its core", and spurred on new efforts by Irish nationalists towards a political solution to the conflict.

女川核電廠2號機跟在311大地震後發生核子事故的福島第一核電廠內機組，同為沸水反應爐（Boiling Water Reactor），今天重啟是日本在經歷核子事故後，首度有沸水反應爐重啟運轉。
日本放送協會（NHK）報導，女川核電廠2號機13年前在311大地震遭受巨大地震及海嘯侵襲，造成多數外部電源喪失，位於地下設備遭到泡水等災情；女川核電廠災後持續採取加高海嘯牆等安全對策後，2020年獲日本原子力規制委員會（類似台灣的核能安全委員會）審查合格可重啟運轉。
日本經濟新聞報導，在311大地震受災、由東北電力公司營運的女川核電廠，今天晚間正式重啟2號機運轉。女川核電廠過去花了超過10年時間進行加高海嘯牆等安全對策工程。
女川核電廠2號機是位於311大地震災區首座重啟運轉的核電機組。今天晚間7時啟動核子反應爐後，預計11月7日開始發電及輸電，在經過原子力規制委員會確認後，最快12月25日恢復商轉，將有助日本冬季電力的穩定供應。
東北放送（TBC）報導，所謂啟動指的是移除反應爐內的137根控制棒，讓反應爐內開始進行核分裂反應；如果核分裂反應穩定的話，所產生的蒸氣將驅動渦輪進入可發電狀態。

The murdered solicitor Rosemary Nelson should have been offered protection by the Northern Ireland Office (NIO), a senior official accepted, according to newly released documents.
Nelson was killed by a loyalist car bomb outside her home in Lurgan, County Armagh in March 1999.
The 40-year-old rose to prominence after taking on a number of high-profile clients, including suspected republican terrorists as well as the family of a Catholic man murdered by a loyalist mob, and a nationalist residents’ group opposing Orange Order parades in the infamous Drumcree standoff.
By the mid-1990s Nelson, who had three children, alleged security force intimidation and reported receiving death threats from loyalists. Her claims that Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers were threatening her while interviewing her clients echoed the experience of the Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, who was shot by loyalists in 1989.
Shortly before her killing, the NIO offered protection to two of her clients, the Portadown councillors Breandán Mac Cionnaith and Joe Duffy, who were campaigning against Orange Order demands to march on Garvaghy Road. However, the NIO decided not to offer the same to Nelson.
The NIO’s most senior official, Joe Pilling, later accepted in conversation with Irish diplomats that “with the benefit of hindsight the NIO ought perhaps to have actively sought her out on this”, according to newly unsealed reports of the conversation from the Irish National Archives.

In 1848, Denis Shine Lawlor suggested that Russell was a student of the Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser, who had calculated "how far English colonisation and English policy might be most effectively carried out by Irish starvation".
Charles Trevelyan, the civil servant with most direct responsibility for the government's handling of the famine, described it in 1848 as "a direct stroke of an all-wise and all-merciful Providence", which laid bare "the deep and inveterate root of social evil"; he affirmed that the Famine was "the sharp but effectual remedy by which the cure is likely to be effected. God grant that the generation to which this opportunity has been offered may rightly perform its part..."
Food exports
The historian Cecil Woodham-Smith wrote in The Great Hunger: Ireland 1845–1849 that no issue has provoked so much anger and embittered relations between England and Ireland "as the indisputable fact that huge quantities of food were exported from Ireland to England throughout the period when the people of Ireland were dying of starvation".
While in addition to the maize imports, four times as much wheat was imported into Ireland at the height of the famine as exported.
Woodham-Smith added that provision via the Poor law union workhouses by the Poor Relief (Ireland) Act 1838 (1 & 2 Vict. c. 56) had to be paid by rates levied on the local property owners, and in areas where the famine was worst, the tenants could not pay their rents to enable landlords to fund the rates and therefore the workhouses. Only by selling food, some of which would inevitably be exported, could a "virtuous circle" be created whereby the rents and rates would be paid, and the workhouses funded. Relief through the workhouse system was simply overwhelmed by the enormous scale and duration of the famine.

The British Empire’s brutal tactics are well known across the world – but many of its methods were first tested in Ireland, Britain’s earliest colony.
Dena Takruri travels to Northern Ireland, which remains under British rule, to examine the deep scars of colonialism and the striking parallels with other former British colonies.

其實都是很基礎的愛爾蘭殖民史與北愛近代史 ──只是長期以來因為媒體聲量的關係，並不是那麼多人知道。（我自己也是因緣巧合之下做了功課才知道，那種感覺滿突然知道了許多課本與大眾不會說得白色恐怖威權時代歷史。就，「解殖感」？）

#轉型正義 當年看以北愛爾蘭共和軍和北愛動亂為主題的《致命突擊隊》（Devil's Own）印象最深的就是一開始英統派份子*闖入年幼的主角家裡在他面前槍殺他父親。
從電影院出來後，我媽說：以前國民黨就是這樣，只是他們是(先)闖進來抓。
當時正好上課上到「清黨」，我以為是在講這件事情，直到長大之後才知道是更近代的事情：白色恐怖。
對，不是闖進來朝你開槍（但有可能是闖進來用刀殺你全家），而是先把人帶走。至於人會不會活著回來，那又是另一回事了。
有多少人莫名其妙死於刑場，又有多少人在監獄裡猝死，還有多少人則是失蹤、再也沒回來。
* 都到了研究所，才知道原來那不是特務，而是親英派的準軍事組織──說穿了也是恐怖分子，但因為媒體話語權長期被英國所把持，所以人們只知道主張愛爾蘭統一（愛爾蘭獨立）的北愛共和軍好壞壞，都不知道還有另一方，也不知道其實北愛動亂時候的國家暴力是包括了軍警鎮壓與特務謀殺，甚至在監獄裡面「不小心」割了子宮的一部分而狂噴血，即使救回來，卻已經永遠無法生育了。
= 下面則是對於電影的一點想法 =
在90年代末期的《致命突擊隊》其實本身還是一種以好萊塢為出發來看北愛爾蘭動亂的作品，只是已經逐漸不是那麼的二元對立了。
過去以IRA（正確來說是北愛動和軍PIRA）作為出發點的多是英國電影，像是出自愛爾蘭導演Neil Jordan的《亂世浮生》（哭泣遊戲；The Crying Game，1992年）是以一個IRA逃兵作為主角。
而好萊塢過去對於北愛爾蘭動亂作為主題的作品，依舊還是不乏正邪對立、主角要對付IRA的劇情；《致命突擊隊》依舊是有這種明顯對立，只是主角（布萊德彼特）變成了IRA的成員，多了小時候遭逢悲劇創傷、英國特務系統的骯髒陰險手法。
劇情簡單來說就是男主角前往美國，試圖拿到武器並運回北愛給同袍使用（期間還遇到黑白兩道的追殺）。
而收留主角的男二（或說男1.20？哈里遜福特）則是很傳統的「視角」：IRA就是壞人，我不管你們是在幹嘛，你們就是壞人（轉介男主角給他的法官則是「共和派同情者」，但跟男1.2一樣都是愛爾蘭裔），(因此)然後結局依舊是「邪不勝正」，只是多了一份悲傷。小時候就是覺得「對，壞人就是該死」，長大後重看才發現「真的壞人沒有死」，而且才發現那結尾其實是很衝擊，甚至讓人很難過的。
只是隨筆，所以內文可能邏輯上不是那麼縝密。

100 years ago, in 1926, Cumann na mBan introduced the Easter Lily to mark the tenth anniversary of the Easter Rising.
Íomha na Gluaiseachta í an lile a léiríonn ár ngrá is meas daoibh siúd a chuaigh romhainn agus a neartaíonn ár ndíograis i dtreo Éire úr Aontaithe.
The lily is the symbol of the movement which shows our love and respect for those who went before us and strengthens our resolve in achieving a new, agreed Ireland
This Easter Sunday, join us in honouring the men and women of 1916, and all the Volunteers who carried their legacy forward in the years that followed.
