Emergency crews worked through the early hours of Friday morning to search for dozens of people believed trapped beneath a collapsed supermarket roof in Riga. A reported 16 people were killed and at least 36 others injured in the incident which occurred at the Latvian capital's 'Maxima' supermarket. Two of the dead are rescue workers killed in a secondary collapse.

Some 36 people have been rescued from the rubble, among them a child who suffered a moderate head injury.

The cause of the collapse is currently unknown, with Riga Deputy Mayor Andry Ameriks refuting earlier eyewitness reports of an explosion and attributing the incident to a possible construction fault.
