夏威夷基拉韋亞火山持續噴發，據外電報導，一位民眾被噴發的熔岩擊中腳部受傷，也是第一次傳出傷害事件。火山噴發引起的災害，讓布法羅大學的研究人員，以過華氏2300度、大約攝氏1260度的高溫熔化石頭，以便研究熔岩帶來的損害。
 
一鏟一鏟的剷起石頭，再倒進特製的爐子裡。這2人不是泥水匠，而是美國布法羅大學的研究人員，他們正在自製熔岩。液化岩石的溫度可達華氏2300度(大約攝氏1260度)。
 
美國布法羅大學研究人員英格：「然後我們把融化的岩石，從爐子裡倒入一個容器內，當熔岩倒入容器之後，我們再注入水，希望熔岩和水會產生作用。」
 
為什麼要花4個小時自己動手液化石頭，原因是他們學校在紐約州的北部，那裡並沒有活動的熔岩可供研究，但是為了進一步研究避免火山噴發出來的熔岩，所造成的大規模損害，所以自己動手做。
 
美國布法羅大學研究人員英格：「最重要的是研究熱輻射是從哪裡出來的，我們想更好的認識熔岩和水的相互作用，實際上這是發生在火山噴發的過程中。」
 
美國布法羅大學博士生哈普：「我們的目標是要準確預測規模大小，以及噴發後我們有多少時間反應，我很榮幸能和這項獨特的研究合作，而且如今全世界也只有幾個地方能夠完成。」
 
自製熔岩危險性很高，所以要穿上專業的防火防熱衣褲，這種防護衣的外層鍍有金屬鋁，有了完善的保護，才能讓他們所從事的熔岩及火山噴發研究得以繼續下去。
