After 20 years of melting permafrost, residents of Newtok, a Yup'ik village of about 380 people, are finally moving to a new village named Mertarvik. Learn more about this fascinating community in transition in the @natgeo story out now (link in my bio @katieorlinsky), written by @craigwelch.

On a summer bird hunt, four boys—from left, Kenyon Kassaiuli, Jonah Andy, Larry Charles, and Reese John—cross a flooded walkway. This is not the first time Newtok has had to relocate. In 1949 the Bureau for Indian Affairs (BIA) built schools in all Alaska native communities after decades of forcing children to leave home to attend boarding schools. The BIA chose the site that is now Newtok without input from the community. As early as 1994, the people of Newtok began planning to eventually relocate again due to erosion and flooding. The situation soon became urgent as a result of climate change and thawing permafrost. It has taken nearly 25 years for Newtok to finally receive the funding and support to complete the process. Still, moving is never easy. As a young writer from Newtok Martha Kasaiuli writes, "Our story is unfolding to a better ending, even if we don't want to leave this place."

想起這是個一想到就心痛而且沒有更痛的危機。

想起這是我認為人類行為最應該改變的事態。

想起這是我希望台灣若在國際上更有發聲權，最希望台灣可以領導改變世界的議題。

它連結暖化但比暖化更嚴重更不可逆，且造成的影響巨大異常，我想到就會想哭的議題。

是一個如果我不用擔心收入，最想全力去推廣世界人重視的議題。

這才是地球暖化下，最大的危機；

極端氣候是可見但變因甚多的危機，海洋酸化則是不可見、不可逆，但更加危險的危機。

它可能造成下一次的生物大滅絕（因為已經造成過了），但我一直覺得它的被關注度實在太低……

這是近期第二次猛然想起這個議題了，就先打字存一下。

甚至可以這樣說。

這個世界上有一種說法是，「全球暖化造成的極端氣候並不是人類製造過多的二氧化碳造成的，而是太陽與地球的自然變遷」。

這個說法也是某些人拿來駁斥「全球暖化」的理論，甚至可以說，目前地球確實是可能要邁入小冰河期，將會逐漸變冷。

但是，即使持這種說法，也沒辦法否認人類製造的二氧化碳被海洋吸收逐漸造成海洋酸化的事實──或許可以這樣說，在過去地球的二氧化碳比例並不如現在的年代，地球一直都是靠海洋在調節大氣中的二氧化碳。

可是當海洋吸收了過量的二氧化碳，酸化使得海洋中的生物死光，海洋中的生物死光之後也會影響陸地上的部分生物，然後一環影響一環，最終人類真的能夠活在這種世界中嗎？

說來人類又為何能夠留一顆海洋酸化的星球給其他生物呢？

極端氣候當然是顯而易見的眼前危機，但海洋酸化才真的是徹底又全面影響也生在生物鏈中的人類這個物種生存的滅絕危機呢。

This video captured by Keith Ladzinski (@ladzinski) shows ice fields on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. They have always suffered from droughts, but the situation became more dire in the last decades due to glacier retreat. At the end of any assignment, images that depict everyday life in the wild usually end up being my favorites. I hope that these moments can help us to see enough of ourselves in a polar bear, a leopard seal, or a humpback whale that we will be inspired to fight against climate change on their behalf.

The record-shattering rainfall that caused deadly flooding across Germany and Belgium in July was made up to nine times more likely by the climate crisis, according to research.

The new study also showed that human-caused global heating has made downpours in the region up to 20% heavier. Last month, parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were inundated with 148 litres of rain per sq metre within 48 hours in a part of Germany that usually sees about 80 litres in the whole of July.

The flooding in Germany and Belgium killed at least 222 people and caused massive damage.

The new study, which focused on the region around two areas that were particularly badly affected: the German districts by the Ahr and Erft river, was conducted by Prof Maarten van Aalst at the University of Twente, in the Netherlands and 38 other scientists.

They used meteorological measurements, high resolution computer models and peer-reviewed research methods to compare the frequency of extreme rainfall like that behind the flooding in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in today’s heated climate with the frequency expected in a world where there had been no human-caused climate change.

The work reinforces the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s landmark report this month that there is “unequivocal” evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are the main cause of worsening extreme weather.

“The huge human and economic costs of these floods are a stark reminder that countries around the world need to prepare for more extreme weather events, and that we urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid such risks from getting even further out of hand,” van Aalst said.

In recent months there has been devastating flooding in western Europe and China, extreme heatwaves in north-west America and forest fires in Russia, Greece, Turkey and the US.

北半球極端高溫持續發威，科學家25號在美國佛州邁阿密外海，測得攝氏38.4度的海水溫度，這樣的溫度，就像在浴缸泡熱水澡，如果經過證實，將創下史上測到的最高海水溫度，對珊瑚還有海洋生態，造成毀滅性的衝擊。而在陸地上，美國亞利桑那州"鳳凰城"持續受熱浪侵襲，柏油路路面溫度高達82度，有不少人只是跌倒就燙傷。

身為水果王國的臺灣，在每一個季節都有不同水果可以吃，甚至外銷到國外。隨著農業技術的進步，不只農產品產量提升，面對天然災害的預防和復原能力也隨之提高。

但近年大家逐漸感受到，似乎氣候逐漸在改變，以前大家最主要面臨的颱風災害，這幾年開始出現較多豪雨、暖冬等災害。最令人印象深刻的就是，這幾年荔枝和水梨這兩個高單價水果，產量大幅減少且價格貴上許多，這也是因為氣候變遷的影響使冬天溫度變高，荔枝開花不容易，水梨接穗易失敗，就算成功結果的果實，還要歷經豪雨、颱風的損害。在未來是不是有許多水果會將面臨吃不到的可能呢？曾經的水果王國將面臨什麼樣的危機呢？

《國家氣候變遷科學報告2024：現象、衝擊與調適》由中央研究院環境變遷研究中心特聘研究員許晃雄以及中央大學水文與海洋研究所教授李明旭擔任主編。報告費時一年半的編撰流程以及科學關鍵重點，面對氣候風險減緩與調適並重。

報告中提到，如果全球暖化無法有效控制溫室氣體排放，台灣夏天可能長達七個月，高溫超過攝氏36℃的天數將增加75天。

另外，海水的升溫也會影響漁獲與養殖漁業，台灣北部海域劍尖槍鎖管（小卷），海水溫度上升攝氏1℃，單位漁獲量將下降15%；暖化2℃，文蛤高溫危害風險也會增加。

模式評估，水稻產量整體趨勢下降，世紀中、末分別減少13%及18%；玉米產量整體也呈下降趨勢，世紀中、末平均分別減少10%及17%。

在生態影響上，天然森林面積適合生長的海拔高度將提高173公尺，反映動植物棲地變化，適生面積僅剩現在約16%；暖化2℃的情境下，海平面上升造成海岸溢淹面積增加，以雲林縣、台南市與基隆市溢淹面積增加較顯著。

全台用水相對敏感的春季，連續不降雨日數越來越多，豐枯水期的差距增加，乾旱事件的強度及頻率會提高，「極端暴雨將成為新常態」。

報告指出，暖化4℃的情境下，現今氣候50年才會發生的極端降雨事件，未來每10年就可能發生；未來侵台颱風的個數減少，但風速與降雨皆呈現增加趨勢，且其中強颱頻率增加。

暖化造成台灣秋冬季擴散不易、臭氧生成增加、空氣品質變差，都市熱島現象會十分顯著。
