Pyrolysis of composite plastic waste - Environmental Technology - Volume 24, Issue 5

The composites studied were polyester, phenolic, epoxy, vinylester, polypropylene and PET resins, reinforced with glass and/or carbon fibre.

Several different composite plastics were pyrolysed in a fixed bed reactor at final temperatures between 350 and 800° C.

The composites studied were polyester, phenolic, epoxy, vinylester, polypropylene and PET resins, reinforced with glass and/or carbon fibre.

The product yields of oil, gas and solid residue were determined together with a detailed composition of the derived gases.

There was evidence to suggest that calcium carbonate filler, present in the polyester and phenolic composites, decomposed to form carbon dioxide at 800° C, which was subsequently involved in char gasification reactions.

There was no noticeable correlation between the composition of these products and the final pyrolysis temperature.

The tensile strength of recovered glass fibre was lower than that of virgin fibre and decreased markedly as the final pyrolysis temperature increased from 650 to 800° C

Thermal degradation of mixed plastic waste to aromatics and gas [德國漢堡]

A poly(vinylchloride) (PVC)-poor light fraction separated from mixed plastic waste (MPW) collected from German households by DSD was pyrolyzed in a technical scale fluidized bed reactor to yield aromatic oils and heat-providing gas.

The most important target products were benzene, toluene, xylenes and styrene with a total yield of 31.4% by weight (referring to the total organic input).

Additionally, pyrolysis gas with a high calorific value of 50 MJ/kg was obtained.

Problematic pollutants, such as chloro-organic compounds and heavy metals, were absent or immobilized during the pyrolysis reaction in a matrix of carbon black.

Pyrolysis of mixed plastics into aromatics [德國漢堡]

Four experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed reactor at different temperatures between 685 and 738° C and feed rates between 400 and 900 g h−1.

The most important oil products were benzene, toluene, xylenes and styrene with a total yield of 30–40% by weight.

The results are compared to those of a technical scale reactor with a longer residence time.

It was shown that the concentration of chloro-organic compounds in the oil decreases at longer residence times.

Fuels by pyrolysis of waste plastics from agricultural and packaging sectors in a pilot scale reactor [匈牙利]

Waste plastics were decomposed in a tube reactor at 520 ° C, using hourly feed rate of 9.0 kg.

Raw materials were selectively collected wastes from agricultural and packaging industry.

Products were separated into gases, gasoline, light and heavy oil by distillation.

Plastic wastes could be converted into gasoline and light oil with yields of 20–48% and 17–36% depending on the used parameters.

The gas and liquid products had significant content of unsaturated hydrocarbons, principally olefins.

In the presence of ZSM-5 catalyst the yields of lighter fractions (especially gasoline) could be considerably increased and the average molecular weight of each fraction has decreased.

Gasoline had C5–C15 hydrocarbons, while light oil had C12–C28.

Gasoline, light oil and heavy oil were nitrogen free and sulphur content was below 12 mg/kg in hydrocarbons obtained by the pyrolysis of polypropylene waste from packaging.

Petrochemical feedstock by thermal cracking of plastic waste
The thermal cracking is one of the possible ways to obtain petrochemical feedstock from polymer wastes.

The properties of the cracking products depend mainly on the type of the raw material. In this study the degradation of different mixtures of polymer wastes (polypropylene and polystyrene) were investigated in a horizontal tube reactor.

Temperature of 510–520 ° C and residence time of 15–30 min were used.

Three reactions of each plastic with PS were conducted in the ratio of 1:1, 1:2 and 1:3.

In all coprocessing reactions, ratio 1:1 afforded the best yields in the form pyrolytic oils.

SIM distillation of hexane soluble portion showed that the low boiling fractions were not found and fractions were obtained only after 96 ° C + boiling point.

It could be due to the vaporization of high volatile components.

In most of the binary pyrolysis, light cycle oil (LCO) fractions have low recovery than heavy cycle oil (HCO).

[PDF] Pyrolysis of Household Plastic Wastes
The chemical composition of the liquids obtained and the yields depended on the original polymer, quality of the waste, and the engineering of thermolysis procedure. The refinement of liquids resulting from pyrolysis is necessary to obtain a quality fuel. The condensed liquids produced from pyrolysis contained highly reactive chemicals such as vinyl, alkene, and three- and four-member cyclic hydrocarbons, which make the storage life of these materials short. For long time storage, however, these liquids must be stabilized either by stabilizers or hydrogenation of the product promptly after collection.

Fluidized bed pyrolysis of a recycled polyethylene [義大利]

Fluidized bed pyrolysis is a special class of feedstock recycling processes for plastics recycling which provides for a rather uniform spectrum of products, reduces the maintenance time and cost and gives the possibility to apply the process even on a relatively small scale.

The continuous experiments indicated how the yield and the composition of products are affected by two key operating variables of the process: the bed temperature and the residence time in the reactor.

Fluidised bed pyrolysis of low density polyethylene to produce petrochemical feedstock [UK]
Low density polyethylene (LDPE) is a major component of municipal solid waste and this paper describes the influence of pyrolysis temperature from 500 to 700° C on the yield and composition of the derived products.

The main gases produced from the pyrolysis of LDPE were hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, butane and butene. There was a dramatic increase in gas yield with increasing temperature of pyrolysis.

Analysis of the derived oils and waxes showed that the pyrolysis of LDPE gave a mainly aliphatic composition consisting of a series of alkanes, alkenes and alkadienes which showed a decrease in concentration as the pyrolysis temperature was increased.

he oil showed an increase in aromatic composition with increasing temperature of pyrolysis and at 700° C significant concentrations of single ring aromatic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were detected.

The derived oil and wax have great potential to be recycled back into the petrochemicals industry as a feedstock for the production of new plastics or the production of refined fuels.

Reaction Kinetic Model For Optimal Pyrolysis Of Plastic Waste Mixtures

The model development is based on the assumption that as plastic wastes are heated in a non-reactive environment they are decomposed homogeneously to various products of gas, oil and char by a first-order rate, irreversible reaction and isothermal condition.

Among the five models, the type II model in which the activated polymer exists as an intermediate product is the most accurate in predicting the pyrolysis products of pure PE or pure PS.

The pyrolysis reaction time for the maximum oil production from PE-PS mixtures is shorter than for PE alone and approaches that of PS alone.

Oil production increases with increase of PS content.

The optimal temperature for maximum oil production is 600° C for the pyrolysis of 2:8, 5:5 and 1:0 mixtures (w/w) of PE and PS. Oil production for PS alone is constant when the pyrolysis is above 600° C.

Composition of products from the pyrolysis of polyethylene and polystyrene in a closed batch reactor: Effects of temperature and residence time [UK]

The compositions of the pyrolysis products of pure low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polystyrene (PS) and their mixtures have been investigated over a temperature range from 300 to 500 ° C.

LDPE was thermally degraded to oil at 425 ° C however, beyond this temperature the proportion of oil product decreased as a result of its conversion to char and hydrocarbon gas.

On the other hand, PS degraded at around 350 ° C, mainly into a viscous dark-coloured oil.

The formation of char only increased marginally until 425 ° C, but was dramatically enhanced at 450 and 500 ° C, reaching up to 30 wt.%.

The oil product from PS even at 350 ° C consisted almost entirely of aromatic compounds especially toluene, ethylbenzene and styrene.

Under increasing temperatures and residence times, the oil product from PS was preferentially converted to char, while gas formation was preferred for the oil from LDPE.

For instance at 500 ° C, PS produced about twice the amount of char obtained from LDPE indicating the role of aromatic compounds in char formation via condensation of the aromatic ring structure.

During the co-pyrolysis of a 7:3 mixture of LDPE and PS, wax product was observed at 350 ° C leading to oil at 400 ° C, indicating that the presence of PS influenced the conversion of LDPE by lowering its degradation temperature.

The mixture produced more oil and less char than the individual plastics at 450 ° C.

Wax Formation in the Pyrolysis of Polyolefins in a Conical Spouted Bed Reactor

The pyrolysis of polyolefins (low-density and high-density polyethylene and polypropylene) in a new kind of reactor, a conical spouted bed, has been studied in the 450−600 ° C range and the kinetics of the formation of wax and individual gaseous products and significant groups of components have been determined.

The activation energy of wax formation is similar for both polyethylenes (214 kJ mol-1 for that of low density and 225 kJ mol-1 for that of high density) and lower for polypropylene (176 kJ mol-1).

The characteristic gas−solid contact of this reactor is especially suitable for selectively obtaining wax (92 wt % from polypropylene and 80 wt % from both polyethylenes) due to the high gas linear-velocity.

Wax composition determined by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry indicates that it is a less branched and that its olefinic content is higher than that of commercial waxes.

Waste Polyolefins to Liquid Fuels via Pyrolysis: Review of Commercial State-of-the-Art and Recent Laboratory Research [愛爾蘭]

waste polyolefins (polyethylenes and polypropylenes)

Current plastic waste generation and management practices are briefly summarised.

Waste management infrastructure in Europe is reliant on landfill, incineration and mechanical recycling, while feedstock recycling plays an insignificant role.

Plastic-to-liquid platforms including delocalised pyrolysis followed by centralised upgrading, stand alone facilities, and integrated waste management infrastructure concepts are briefly discussed.

Kinetic Study of Polyolefin Pyrolysis in a Conical Spouted Bed Reactor

The results are evidence of the good performance of this original reactor for kinetic studies of flash pyrolysis of plastics at high temperatures, which is due to bed isothermicity and to the fast and uniform coating of sand particles with melted plastic and, consequently, to lower limitations of heat and mass transfer.

Agglomeration problems are minimum in this reactor, which is due to the good gas−solid contact in the spouted bed and to the vigorous particle movement attained with the conical geometry of the reactor.

Pyrolysis–gasification of plastics, mixed plastics and real-world plastic waste with and without Ni–Mg–Al catalyst [UK]

The results showed that lower gas yield (11.2 wt.% related to the mass of plastic) was obtained for the non-catalytic non-steam pyrolysis–gasification of polystyrene at the gasification temperature of 800 ° C, compared with the polypropylene (59.6 wt.%) and high density polyethylene (53.5 wt.%) and waste plastic (45.5 wt.%).

In addition, the largest oil product was observed for the non-catalytic pyrolysis–gasification of polystyrene.

The steam catalytic pyrolysis–gasification of polystyrene presented the lowest hydrogen production of 0.155 and 0.196 (g H2/g polystyrene) at the gasification temperatures of 800 and 850 ° C, respectively.

More coke was deposited on the catalyst for the pyrolysis–gasification of polypropylene and waste plastic compared with steam catalytic pyrolysis–gasification of polystyrene and high density polyethylene.

Filamentous carbons were observed for the used Ni–Mg–Al catalysts from the pyrolysis–gasification of polypropylene, high density polyethylene, waste plastic and mixed plastics.

However, the formation of filamentous carbons on the coked catalyst from the pyrolysis–gasification of polystyrene was low.

Pyrolysis of plastic wastes. 1. Effect of plastic waste composition on product yield

Pyrolysis of plastic waste could have an important role in converting this waste into economically valuable hydrocarbons, which can be used either as fuels or as feed stock in the petrochemical industry.

End product yields and properties depend on the plastic waste composition.

The presence of PE (polyethylene) increased alkane content, whilst PS (polystyrene) led to higher aromatic content in the end product.

The presence of PP (polypropylene) favoured alkene formation.

Therefore, both PS and PP increased the octane number of end product. Therefore, the desired end product can be obtained by adequate blending of plastic wastes.

Recovery of Chemicals and Gasoline-Range Fuels from Plastic Wastes via Pyrolysis - Energy Sources - Volume 27, Issue 14 [土耳其]

Pyrolysis appears to be a technique that is able to reduce a bulky, high polluting industrial waste while producing energy and/or valuable chemical compounds.

The total yields of paraffins and olefins of PE and PP wastes obtained by pyrolysis were higher than that of PS.

The yields of paraffins from plastic wastes decrease from 34.4 to 27.7% with increasing pyrolysis temperature from 625 to 800 K, and then slightly increase with temperature increasing from 825 to 875 K.

The yields of olefins decrease from 41.3 to 32.4 with increasing pyrolysis temperature from 625 to 875 K.

The yields of naphthalenes increase from 19.5 to 22.7% with increasing pyrolysis temperature from 625 to 875 K.

The yields of aromatics increase from 3.2 to 11.5% with increasing pyrolysis temperature from 625 to 875.

Vacuum pyrolysis of commingled plastics containing PVC II. Product analysis

A PVC sample and a commingled plastic sample composed of HDPE/LDPE/PP/PS/PVC have been pyrolyzed in two consecutive steps at 360 and 520° C in order to separately trap HCl.

The main gaseous and liquid products, including the chlorinated hydrocarbons, were identified by chromatography.

The yields and pyrolysis product composition from each single polymer were compared with those from the commingled plastics. At 520° C, 99.55 wt.% of the total chlorine was trapped as HCl corresponding to 4.6 wt.% in yield, on an original feedstock basis, followed by 62.0 wt.% wax, 31.1 wt.% oil, 1.0 wt.% gas and 1.2 wt.% solid char residue (loss was 0.1 wt.%).

The pyrolysis oil contained 12 ppm Cl on a pyrolysis oil basis. This value was less than what was expected (153 ppm) from the theoretical values which were calculated when the individual polymers were pyrolysed.

However, the hydrocarbons produced in the oil fraction were similar to those identified during the pyrolysis of the single plastics.

Analysis of products derived from the fast pyrolysis of plastic waste
Elizabeth A. Williams, Paul T. Williams [UK]
Pyrolysis was carried out at temperatures between 500 and 700° C. This gave widely differing product yields of between 9.79 and 88.76% gas and between 18.44 and 57.11% oil. The oils were analysed for their functional groups using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The molecular weight distribution was also determined using size exclusion chromatography. It was found that as temperature was increased the amount of aromatic compounds in the oil increased. The molecular weight range was also affected. Potential applications for the oils was also investigated.

The effect of mixing on the product yield and composition was examined. The results showed that the polymers studied did not react independently, but some interaction between samples was observed. The product yield for the mixture of plastics at 700° C was 9· 63% gas, 75· 11% oil, 2· 87% char and 2· 31% HCl. The gases identified were H2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, C3H6, C3H8, C4H8, C4H10, CO2 and CO. The composition of oils were determined using Fourier Transform infra-red spectrometry and size exclusion chromatography. Analysis showed the presence mainly of aliphatic compounds with small amounts of aromatic compounds.

Analysis of products from the pyrolysis and liquefaction of single plastics and waste plastic mixtures

Waste plastics in the form of two examples of real world municipal solid waste plastics and a simulated mixture of municipal waste plastics were pyrolysed and liquefied under moderate temperature and pressure in a batch autoclave reactor. In addition, the five main polymers which constitute the majority of plastics occurring in European municipal solid waste comprising, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate and polyvinyl chloride were also reacted.

The plastics were reacted under both a nitrogen (pyrolysis) and hydrogen pressure (liquefaction) and the yield and composition of products are reported.

The hydrocarbon gases produced were mainly methane, ethane, propane and lower concentrations of alkene gases.

A mainly oil product was produced with the mixed plastic waste with significant concentrations of aromatic compounds, including single ring aromatic compounds.

The composition of the oils and gases suggested that there was significant interaction of the plastics when they were pyrolysed and liquefied as a mixture compared to the results expected from reactions of the single plastics.

Interaction of Plastics in Mixed-Plastics Pyrolysis - Energy & Fuels (ACS Publications)

The pyrolysis of mixed-plastic waste has been proposed as a means of recycling to produce petrochemical feedstock.

The interaction of the main plastic types in plastic mixtures is significant in predicting the likely yield and composition of products from different plastic mixtures.

The six main plastics in municipal solid waste are high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET).

Each of the plastics was pyrolyzed individually in a fixed-bed reactor heated at 25 ° C min-1 to a final temperature of 700 ° C.

Polystyrene was then mixed with each of the other five plastics in a ratio of 1:1 and pyrolyzed in the fixed-bed reactor under the same pyrolysis conditions.

The yield and composition of the derived oil/wax and gases was determined. The main gases produced from the individual plastics were hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethene, propane, propene, butane, and butene and for the PET plastic carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

Hydrogen chloride was also produced with PVC. Analysis of the oil/wax showed that the polyalkene plastics, HDPE, LDPE, and PP, gave a mainly aliphatic composition consisting of a series of alkanes, alkenes, and alkadienes.

PVC gave a mainly aromatic oil, and PS and PET, which have aromatic groups in their structures, also showed a more aromatic composition. There was a higher gas yield from the mixtures of the plastics with PS than would be expected from the pyrolysis of the individual plastics, coupled with a reduction in the oil/wax phase. The average molecular weight of the oil/wax from the mixed plastics was less than expected from the individual molecular weights.

Compositional analysis of the oil/wax showed that changes in the concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were produced with the mixture compared to that expected from the individual plastics.

To perform a stepwise pyrolysis in laboratory scale a cascade of well stirred reactors has been developed where mixing of the reactor contents occurs by circulating of stainless steel spheres. Examples for the separation of single plastics by stepwise thermal decomposition of mixtures of poly(vinyl chloride), polystyrene and polyethylene are presented. In the first step hydrogen chloride from poly(vinyl chloride) is released, in the second step styrene from polysytrene is formed and in the third step aliphatic compounds from polyethylene decompositon are trapped.

Techno-Economic Evaluation of High Temperature Pyrolysis Processes for Mixed Plastic Waste [荷蘭]
The chlorine from PVC was removed in this process using low temperature pyrolysis converting 98% of the chlorine into HC1 gas.

The remaining chlorine is subsequently converted to CaCl2 by reaction with CaCO3, but this is unattractive from an economical and environmental point of view as a large amount of sand has to be disposed of to prevent agglomeration of CaCl2 and sand at high CaCl2 concentrations.

Removal of the last 2 w% of chlorine using NH3 or NaHCO3 is probably preferable.

The use of a dedicated product separation section should only be considered, if this is required for non technical/economic or geographical reasons.
