Emergy Evaluation of Biofuel Production from Water Hyacinth Biomass: Case Study of a Sub Region of Pantanal, Brazil


The theoretical energy balance of water hyacinth pyrolysis, considering solar drying of the biomass, demonstrates that:

(a) bio-oil energy efficiency is 34% (bio-oil higher heating value, HHV, is 15.9 MJ/kg),
(b) charcoal energy efficiency is 24% (HHV 8.4 MJ/kg) and
(c) combustible gases energy efficiency is 42% (HHV 6,6 MJ/kg);

where wet biomass of water hyacinth HHV is 14.1 MJ/kg, the total primary energy input (biomass plus electric power) for a compact fast pyrolysis plant (1000 kg/h) is 14202 MJ.

The electric power consumption is low because the combustible gases are used to feedback energy to the pyrolysis plant, also of the total inflow of biomass a little part is converted into flue gases.

Effects of temperature on pyrolysis characteristics of water hyacinth
The results showed that compared with the bio-oil produced at 450—550 ℃:
-  at 275—375 ℃,not only the increase of bio-oil was bigger, but also the quality of bio-oil with less acid,more esters and higher calorific value was better;
while
-  at 450—550 ℃,it was apparently beneficial for the production of high calorific value gas such as H2 and CO,the aperture of biomass carbon was larger and the crystal structure was more stable.

Elemental analysis of water hyacinth liquid tar indicated that it contains significant amount of oxygen atom.

GC–MS analysis shows that the water hyacinth liquid tar is a suitable precursor for the preparation of intermediate material for carbon fiber due to high content of phenolic compounds.

The carbonization of water hyacinth resin was carried out at 900 ° C and the yield of the maximum total yield of carbon fiber was 29 %.
