One scholarly theory is that he originated in a shortened form of ˀel ḏū yahwī ṣabaˀôt, "El who creates the hosts".

Professor Frank Moore Cross considers this to be one of the cultic names of El.

However, this phrase is nowhere attested either inside or outside the Bible, and the two gods are in any case quite dissimilar, with El being elderly and paternal and lacking Yahweh's association with the storm and battles.

Even if the above issues are resolved, Yahweh is generally agreed to have a non-causative etymology because otherwise, YHWH would be translated as YHYH.

It also begs the question on why the Israelites would want to shorten the epithet. One possible reason includes the co-existence of religious modernism and conservatism being the norm in all religions.

The oldest plausible occurrence of his name is in the Egyptian demonym tꜣ šꜣsw Yhwꜣ, "The Land of the Shasu YHWA," (Egyptian: 𓇌𓉔𓍯𓄿 Yhwꜣ) in an inscription from the time of Amenhotep III (1390–1352 BCE), the Shasu being nomads from Midian and Edom in northern Arabia.

The dominant view is therefore that Yahweh was a "divine warrior from the southern region associated with Seir, Edom, Paran and Teman".

There is considerable although not universal support for this view, but it raises the question of how Yahweh made his way to the north. An answer many scholars consider plausible is the Kenite hypothesis, which holds that traders brought Yahweh to Israel along the caravan routes between Egypt and Canaan.

This ties together various points of data, such as the absence of Yahweh from Canaan, his links with Edom and Midian in the biblical stories, and the Kenite or Midianite ties of Moses, but its major weaknesses are that the majority of Israelites were firmly rooted in Palestine, while the historical role of Moses is problematic. It follows that if the Kenite hypothesis is to be maintained, then it must be assumed that the Israelites encountered Yahweh (and the Midianites/Kenites) inside Israel and through their association with the earliest political leaders of Israel.

     （Jgospel 2011年3月7日）耶穌（Jesus）在基督教中是神聖不可侵犯的，不管你是不是信教徒，對於耶穌被釘在十字架上以自己的肉身和血液替天下蒼生贖罪的事情都會有所耳聞。但一直以來對於耶穌是否有妻子這件事情，基督教卻非常忌諱，從來都是避而不談，認為這樣的猜測是非常荒誕的。但實際上，在很多考古學家的眼中，耶穌並非是不食人間煙火的，至少他有妻子這件事是有據可依的。

      據英國每日郵報報導，對於這一點英國BBC廣播公司的弗蘭斯卡博士就堅信這一點。在3月6日初版的《每日郵報》上，這位女博士撰寫了一篇文章，詳細論述了耶穌是有妻子的這一考古發現。她寫道：「他的名字是耶和華，他是神的代表，是上帝，但在經過多年的研究之後，我和我的同事得出了一個非常令人不舒服的結論，這位上帝是有妻子的。」

      弗蘭斯卡論述了她在牛津大學的學習過程，翻譯了很多聖經的英文版本，在此過程中她才知曉耶穌是在和多位競爭者進行角逐之後最終奠定自己上帝地位的。像聖經中的(巴力)、亞舍拉（Asherah）等都是耶穌曾經的競爭者。在如今的《聖經》中他們都是「假神」。

      與此同時，弗蘭斯卡還發現了一件令她感到吃驚的事情，亞舍拉像曾經被供奉在耶路撒冷的耶和華神殿中，她是繁殖女神。對於此弗蘭斯卡開始思考，她究竟和耶穌有著怎樣的關係，難道真的如聖經所言是巴力（惡魔的化身）的妻子，那麼簡單麼？

      在此時，弗蘭斯卡也逐漸知曉了一些耶穌和亞舍拉的傳聞，開始懷疑這是否隱藏了不為人知的秘密。在BBC她專註於這一課題，利用更多的考古碑文和文獻了解了耶穌和亞舍拉的關係。她寫道：「20世紀早期發現的迦南沿海(Canaan)城名叫殷商古城，這座城市是在敘利亞(Syria)，雖然不為人知，但是卻發現了很小的亞舍拉像。殷商古城和耶路撒冷有著共同點，城市中的居民都是信仰耶穌的。如果耶穌是唯一的信仰的神，那麼怎麼會留存有亞舍拉的雕像呢？」

      弗蘭斯卡還跟隨考古學家發現了一塊巨大的破碎陶器，距今約西元前8世紀。考古學家們認為這可能是一個旅行商人的物品，上面寫的祝福話語太過匪夷所思：「願耶和華和他的亞舍拉賜福於我們」。這樣確鑿的證據徹底顛覆了耶穌的形象，而這也使得弗蘭斯卡堅信上帝是有妻子的。

      當然，她也明白通過考古文獻來著證明耶穌是有妻子是一件很困難的事情，因為《聖經》中耶穌是道成肉身，關於他和亞舍拉的事情都是背棄神的人編造的謊言。 「但為什麼這些證據一旦發現，就會引起基督教的極大惶恐呢？」弗蘭斯卡在最後寫道。

I just started watching it it’s really good. One of the reasons I made this post thanks.

- In one of the recent episodes of Dan McClellan's Data > Dogma podcast, they talk about YHWH perhaps originating as a family or ancestral deity, but later they took on storm god characteristics. Baal is a storm god, but also has war-like characteristics. Many of the early poems in the Hebrew Bible like the songs of Miriam and Deborah refer to war, so this suggests an early cult of female priests during the nomadic era. I think Dan related the war theme to the idea of military skirmishes fighting over territory and resources.

  Accusations of onolatry against the Jews, spread from the Egyptian milieu, with its understanding of the donkey's Seth-related importance, to the rest of the Graeco-Roman world, which was largely ignorant of this context. In the most famous variations of narratives alleging Jewish onolatry Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Seleucid king famous for raiding the Jerusalem Temple, supposedly discovered that its Holiest of Holies was not empty, but instead contained a donkey idol, and Tacitus (early second century CE) claimed that the Jews dedicated in their holiest shrine a statue of a wild ass.

  After the emergence of Christianity the same charge was also repeated against its devotees. Most famously so in the earliest known depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus, the Alexamenos graffito, where a Christian by the name of Alexamenos is shown worshipping a donkey-headed crucified god.

- 埃及亞歷山大城/Alexander港其實在過去是最大的猶太人聚散地，比巴勒斯坦/以色列還多。
