The Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday issued a round of sweeping layoffs, execut
ing the first significant cost-cutting move under new owner Tom Dundon.

The team did not disclose the number of employees let go, but three team sources
 told The Oregonian/OregonLive that just over 70 people were affected. The layof
fs came seven weeks after Dundon, the Dallas billionaire, and his ownership grou
p officially took over the franchise.




“Today, as part of our plans to position the organization for the future, we ma
de the difficult decision to restructure several areas of the business,” Blazer
s president Dewayne Hankins told The Oregonian/OregonLive via a statement. “The
se changes impacted talented people who have helped shape the Trail Blazers over
 many years. We are deeply grateful for their contributions, their leadership an
d the care they showed every day for our team, our fans and the Portland communi
ty. Our focus now is supporting those affected through the transition and positi
oning the organization for long-term success.”

Employees learned about the layoffs during a Tuesday morning group video call, w
hich lasted roughly two minutes. The employees were told they had been laid off
and would receive more information at their personal email accounts.

The layoffs affected both business and basketball operations and ranged from sen
ior vice presidents to public relations employees to content producers. Digital
reporter Casey Holdahl, who had been with the organization for more than 18 year
s, announced on social media that he had been let go.

The layoffs are the most substantial since June 2020, when the Blazers eliminate
d roughly 40 jobs and delivered a round of salary reductions. However, that came
 in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tuesday’s moves came amid a change in o
wnership and reinforced Dundon’s pledge to run a more “efficient” organizatio
n.




One high-ranking team official told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the Blazers we
re one of the largest organizations in the NBA, an unsustainable reality conside
ring they fetch the league’s lowest sponsorship revenue and rank near the botto
m in ticket revenue. Even with the layoffs, the Blazers’ total staffing is not
the lowest in the league, although that figure includes Rip City Management, whi
ch operates other events at Moda Center as well as Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Staff reductions following a sale are not uncommon, though the scale of the Blaz
ers’ layoff felt particularly severe. Last year, after Alex Rodriguez and Marc
Lore closed on the sale of the Minnesota Timberwolves, that franchise laid off r
oughly 40 employees.

球隊出售後進行人力縮編其實並不少見，但拓荒者這次裁員的規模仍讓外界感到特別嚴重，

The elimination of jobs could be seen as another setback for Dundon in terms of
building goodwill in Portland. The owner of the Carolina Hurricanes and Blazers
executives are deep in negotiations with both the city and Multnomah County abou
t a multi-governmental funding package to renovate Moda Center and secure a long
-term lease that keeps the franchise rooted in Portland. That has encountered si
gnificant pushback from some city leaders, with a labor agreement that would pro
tect jobs seen as one of the key hurdles.
