WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — During his second spring training workout as a Major Le
ague Baseball player, Tatsuya Imai found a friend. He finished fielding a ground
 ball on the pitcher’s mound and approached one of the few people familiar with
 his plight.

在成為大聯盟球員後的第二次春訓練習中，今井達也交到了一位朋友，他在投手丘上處理完一顆滾地球後，走向少數幾位能理解他處境的人


“I know what it’s like being on his side,” said right-hander Ryan Weiss. “I
know what it’s like being a foreigner on a team where you don’t speak that lan
guage.”

「我知道他是什麼感覺」瑞恩說

「我知道在一支說著不同語言的球隊裡當外國人是什麼感覺」


Weiss represented Imai’s best chance to break a barrier. Not even one week into
 spring training, Imai had grown tired of being isolated inside a South Florida
hotel room. He asked Weiss what he did during his spare time, after workouts wer
e over. Weiss told Imai he spends most of it with his wife, Hailey.

瑞恩成為今井打破隔閡的最佳機會，在春訓甚至開始還不到一週，今井就已厭倦被困在南佛
州旅館房間裡的孤單，他問瑞恩在訓練結束後的空閒時間都做些什麼，瑞恩告訴他，大多數
時間都和妻子Hailey 一起度過



“(Imai) said something different, but he was like ‘I’m very bored at the hote
l,’” Weiss said with a laugh.

“I was like, ‘Do you want to get dinner tonight?’ He was like, ‘I would love
 to.’”

「（今井）講的話有點不一樣，但大意就是『我在飯店真的很無聊』」瑞恩笑著說

「我就說：『今晚要不要一起吃晚餐？』他回答：『我很樂意』」


Weiss asked Imai whether he preferred a Japanese or American restaurant. Imai ch
ose American cuisine. Weiss extended the dinner invitation to Mike Burrows, his
throwing partner and another starting pitcher new to the Astros’ clubhouse. Bur
rows accepted.

瑞恩問今井想吃日式還是美式餐廳，今井選擇了美式，他們把晚餐邀請擴大到他的傳接球搭
檔、同樣是新加入太空人休息室的先發投手 Mike Burrows，Burrows也接受了邀請


“(Weiss) knows that transition and how big of a jump that is,” Burrows said.
“Mine is way more minor in comparison to that — coming from another country, a
nother culture, (speaking) a different language. It’s a much bigger jump. But I
 think he understood that, and that’s why he wanted to create that comfort leve
l with Imai.”

「（瑞恩）知道那種轉換有多困難、是多麼大的跨越」Burrows 說

「跟那相比，我的轉變小得多——來自另一個國家、另一種文化、（說著）不同的語言，那
是更巨大的轉變，但我想他明白這點，所以才想替今井創造一種舒適感」


The party gathered at Batch Southern Kitchen in downtown West Palm Beach. Imai i
ndulged in short rib and ordered another sandwich afterward. Banter between the
pitchers ranged from reliving shared experiences to answering some questions abo
ut the paths they’ve taken to the sport’s pinnacle.

這群人聚在西棕櫚灘市中心的Batch Southern Kitchen，今井大快朵頤地享用牛小排，之後
還再點了一份三明治，投手們的談笑內容從回憶共同經歷，到回答彼此關於如何走到棒球巔
峰的問題



Imai’s interpreter, Ryo Takagi, joined the group to facilitate communication —
 something the Japanese star hoped this gathering could start to simplify.

今井的翻譯高木亮也加入聚會協助溝通——這位日本球星希望透過這次聚會，能讓未來的交
流變得更簡單


“One of the things he brought up is him wanting to learn more English so he cou
ld have a better relationship with us,” Burrows said. “That’s obviously very
cool and I want to reciprocate that energy, learn some Japanese and learn to spe
ak his language.”

「他提到的一件事，是他想學更多英文，好和我們建立更好的關係」Burrows說

「那真的很棒，我也想回應這份心意，學點日文、學著說他的語言」



The Astros coaching staff is trying to assist.

Huitron spells it and offers the proper phonetic pronunciation in four languages
: English, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin, in recognition of Taiwanese reliever
Ck.

Astros players have long touted their clubhouse culture as one that welcomes eve
ryone and has easy absolutes. Former utilityman Mauricio Dubón once acknowledge
d, “We don’t have many rules.”

太空人球員長期以來都稱讚球隊的休息室文化是歡迎所有人、原則簡明，前太空人工具人Ma
uricio Dubon曾說：「我們沒有太多規矩」


Weiss’s initiative to plan their dinner is not lost on either Imai or Burrows,
both of whom have been reserved to begin their Astros’ career. Imai’s humor ha
s captivated some teammates, but the language barrier is still something both si
des must work through. Perhaps the football sitting inside Imai’s locker — whi
ch he tossed as part of his throwing program in Japan and will continue here —
can help to bridge the gap.

瑞恩主動安排這頓晚餐的心意，今井與 Burrows 都看在眼裡，兩人在展開太空人生涯之初
都較為拘謹，今井的幽默已吸引部分隊友，但語言障礙仍是雙方必須共同克服的課題，或許
我放在今井置物櫃裡的那顆美式足球——那是他在日本投球訓練的一部分，如今也將持續使
用——能幫助拉近彼此的距離
