[Snagbug] Like a mythical unicorn, this specific caterpillar is also shrouded in a cloud of mystery and fantasy. When first spotted by @thru_de_lenz , a grand pointed horn extended from its head. However, upon returning to the find, the mystifying protrusion had disappeared without a trace of retraction as seen in the later images.

With the aid of @sofwanbadr @chaceingmao @yeapbenedict and Dr. Ian J Kitching, it was determined that the species was Epinanga borneensis through identifying the host plant. Due to the odd circumstances however, the discovery has been concluded to be an anomaly... at least for now. What do you think could be an explanation to this horned insect?

居家蟑螂剋星

牠是產於溫帶、亞熱帶地區，名為「蜚蠊瘦蜂」的卵寄生蜂。

既然蜚蠊瘦蜂這種蜂能夠消滅蟑螂卵鞘，那麼，世界上有沒有會直接攻擊蟑螂成蟲的蜂類呢？有的，在熱帶地區有某些長背泥蜂科的種類，該科的蜂身形酷似螞蟻，也是蟑螂的天敵。特別的是，這些蜂專門獵捕蟑螂的成蟲或若蟲，將之拖入巢中，做為其後代的食物。部分種類於台灣低海拔山區亦可發現，但就不如蜚蠊瘦蜂那般常見了。

部分半翅目的昆蟲如介殼蟲、蚜蟲、粉蝨等能夠分泌蜜露。螞蟻常在介殼蟲周圍出沒，其實就是為了吸食介殼蟲提供的蜜露。為了這樣的目的，熱帶大頭家蟻會照顧這群介殼蟲，並協助驅趕試圖接近的瓢蟲或寄生蜂等介殼蟲天敵。會產蜜露的昆蟲，常被比喻成「螞蟻的乳牛」，就像人類飼養牛的情形；乳牛供應鮮乳，人類則負責照料乳牛。

Meet the newly discovered parasitic tongue-eating louse: Ceratothoa springbok! Which was first described and named this yea off the southern coast of Africa!

This incredible picture of the new species was taken by the immensely talented Don Marx, and was found in the mouth of a carpenter fish (Argyrozona argyrozona), off the coast of Struisbaai in South Africa.

Most of you who follow this page will be well aware of these remarkable parasites, but for those who haven't heard of these creatures before.....the tongue-eating louse is a marine parasite which lives most of its life within the mouths of fish. They latch onto the tongue and use it as a straw to drink blood from. Eventually the tissue atrophies and the little parasites takes the place of the tongue while the shrivelled remains of it as a source from which to feed on the blood of the host.

Pretty well every vertebrate hosts it's own little menagerie of parasites, so every time you see a bird or fish, just remember that they're likely supporting a whole diversity of other species within the ecosystem!

英國超市特易購（Tesco）近來發生一件毒蜘蛛事件，超市店員傑克（Jack Farrar）在整理從哥倫比亞進口的香蕉時，意外發現一隻蜘蛛，並拍下影片上傳推特，隨即被網友認出是世界上最毒蜘蛛。而科學家指出男性被咬到後會「勃起數小時不消」。對此，特易購超市宣布會徹查供應商，以及香蕉出貨前都會經過仔細清洗與檢查。

根據《每日郵報》報導，店員傑克在整理來自哥倫比亞的進口香蕉時，發現有一隻蜘蛛，他躲到貨架後並拍下蜘蛛的身影，影片中可看見一隻淺褐色的蜘蛛奮力揮動牠的螯肢，這是蜘蛛要攻擊前的警告動作。

傑克完整記錄下蜘蛛的動作，並上傳推特發文，表示「這是乘坐哥倫比亞頭等艙過來的蜘蛛，為您提供牠的特寫鏡頭」，隨後他又補充「遇到這種情況後，我不知道以後要用什麼心情整理水果貨箱。」

影片上傳後，引起許多網友的注意，有一名肖恩· 費爾（Sean Fair）的推特用戶表示，「這看起來像是香蕉蜘蛛，它是世界上最有毒的蜘蛛之一！」

不過，目前這則貼文已經刪除了，特易購聲明，會對供應商進行調查，發言人強調在香蕉售出前都會經過仔細的清洗與檢查，只有極少數情況會沒發現蜘蛛。

另據《20 minutos》報導，香蕉蜘蛛（Phoneutria nigriventer）又稱巴西流浪蜘蛛，因喜好躲在香蕉裡而得名，毒素為神經毒，受到威脅時，會擺動前肢警告敵人，如果被香蕉蜘蛛咬到，患者會出現噁心，頭暈和發燒到暫時性麻痺等情況，嚴重時甚至會致命。

有趣的是，科學家發現如果男性被香蕉蜘蛛咬到，毒液中「PnTx2-6」成分可讓男性維持數小時以上的勃起，國外出現過一名男子被香蕉蜘蛛咬到後，沒有因劇毒死亡，反而勃起了4小時，因此巴西有數個實驗室正努力從毒液提取有用成分，希望製成解決勃起功能障礙的藥品。

Cystisoma has a complex visual system. They have a curtain-like retina, with widely separated structures called rhabdoms. Rhabdoms are transparent, crystalline receptive structures found in the compound eyes of arthropods (which includes insects, arachnids, and crustaceans). Incoming rays of light pass through a transparent cone, which acts to converge the rays onto the tip of the rhabdom. This adaptation of the eyes makes them minimally visible to potential predators.

小知識：螞蟻學家其實是獨立於昆蟲學家的一門專門學問

然後我覺得很驚訝的是這些整天研究螞蟻的科學家這麼不善長養螞蟻…

- 我覺得跟流派（？也有關係，有的研究者認為野外觀察重要性大於實驗室重現，也有的實驗只需要能重現野外一單一現象或假說，也不需要特別養整個蟻群。

  現在是比較簡單基礎實驗做的差不多了，想更進一步研究就需要完整的蟻群

- 之前很有名的螞蟻研究書籍內容多半也是在說明鎷蟻跟環境的關係還有蟻種間的競爭 這樣看來鎷蟻學家在過去多是觀察巢外行為 對巢內的觀察一直無能為力

フナムシ（船虫、海蛆、学名：Ligia exotica）は等脚目フナムシ科に属する甲殻綱の一種。同科の代表種として知られ、日本を含む熱帯から温帯の海岸に広く分布する代表的な海岸動物である。

強い苦みと腐敗臭があり、非常にまずいという報告がある。しかしながら、臭いの原因は食性に由来するものという考えもあり、脚の付け根のわずかな筋肉には、わずかに甲殻類系の風味が感じられる。

[flynn prall] Check out the cool leg-ticking actions from this undescribed Peacock Spider.

This awesome species was found by the legend @wa_peacock_jumping_spiders in May this year, it seems to be a northern Bubo type. This guy could be a new species or a cool variant (awaiting DNA results).

12日澎湖湖西鄉龍門巷弄驚見一隻含有劇毒的銅鑄熟若蟹，澎湖漁業生物研究中心獲報後連夜將螃蟹帶回，研判應該是隨著漁民捕魚的刺網上岸。

據悉，銅鑄熟若蟹是從水溝巷道中竄出，被湖西鄉龍門住戶的小朋友發現，所幸家長察覺可能有毒，緊急通報通報澎湖漁業生物研究中心，研究中心帶回作為標本並進行研究，研判螃蟹可能是隨著漁民捕魚的刺網上岸，因為不能食用而遭到丟棄，才會出現在水溝。

根據日本研究資料，僅1毫克的銅鑄熟若蟹肉就足以殺死30隻以上的老鼠。農業知識入口網資料指出，銅鑄熟若蟹分布於東南亞各國、印度、非洲和南太平洋群島，台灣分布於南部恆春半島、小琉球、蘭嶼和綠島等地珊瑚礁和岩礁。最毒的部位為蟹腳，其次為蟹殼，內臟和肌肉都有毒性，而且毒素不會因烹煮而消失。

澎湖漁業生物研究中心提醒，民眾若發現色彩特別豔麗的螃蟹時，切勿急著吃，可通知研究單位處理，避免食用有性命之虞。
