Slow Pyrolysis of Banana Culture Waste: Leaves and Pseudostem

Slow pyrolysis of the samples was carried out in a batch reactor, at temperature from ambient up to 500 ° C, residence time of 60 minutes and under inert atmosphere. The pyrolysis products were gas, liquids (bio-oil and pyroligneous acid) and solids (vegetal coal).

Characterization of Banana (Musa spp.) Pseudo-Stem and Fruit-Bunch-Stem as a Potential Renewable Energy Resource

For every tonne of bananas picked, 100 kg of fruit is rejected and about 4 tonnes of wastes are generated.

It means that for every cycle of production, four times of wastes are generated. Banana wastes range from the rotten fruit, peel, fruit-bunch-stem, leaves, pseudo-stem, and rhizome.

Thermal stability of both banana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem was around 150oC.

Decomposition of bothbanana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem occurred between 300o C and 350oC, while the degradation of the materials took place above 430oC for banana pseudo-stem and, 430oC for banana fruit-bunch-stem.

Feeding of Banana (Musa spp.) Plantation Wastes for Fast Pyrolysis Process (PDF Download Available)

Using the pyrolysis process, agricultural residue such as banana waste can be converted into bio-char, bio-oil, and gases. The fast pyrolysis process of banana wastes on the available 150g/h rig requires particle size reduction. The particle size of less than 150�m constitutes 50% and particles in the 150-250�m ranges make up 28% of the distribution of particle size of banana leaves. The particle size of less than 150�m makes up 52% and particles in the 150-250�m ranges constitute 28% of the distribution of particle size for banana pseudo-stem. A new
gravity chute feeder is also designed for this fast pyrolysis system. A series of feeding tests were conducted using this new feeder. The advantages and limitations will be presented. A comparison with the previously designed feeder will be discussed.

Study on Sustainable Banana Waste Management through compost and Biochar Production for Soil Amelioration and Environment Preservation (土壌改良と環境保全のための堆肥化,炭化処理によるバナナ廃棄物の持続的管理に 関する研究)

Pyrolysis temperature of 400° C appeared ideal for agricultural-use biochar production; besides, 400° C is attainable using low-cost fieldbased equipment for poor farmers. 600° C was recommended for carbon sequestration; however, attainment of this temperature requires more advanced/expensive equipment.

In both cases, presence of moisture in the peels was shown to facilitate humification. Further studies are necessary to confirm this phenomenon, and clarify the mode of action.

Oxidative fast pyrolysis of banana leaves in fluidized bed reactor

The process produced 49.6% gases, 27.0% bio-oil and 23.3% bio-char.

The light and heavy bio-oil presented complex chemical compounds and phenolic and acid nature.

The heavy bio-oil showed elevated higher heating value of 25 MJ/kg.

The bio-char released high energy under combustion, enabling it to be used as fuel.

The results suggest potential for generating fuel products and chemical inputs from fast pyrolysis of dried banana leaves.
