Currently included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in #Turkey, this religious complex is presumed to have been built in the 4th century AD during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I, by two priests named Barnabas and Sophronios who were natives to Athens, Greece.

Today, Sümela monastery is, perhaps, the most popular tourist attraction in Turkey’s Black Sea region. 說起希臘，其中一個最標誌性的景觀莫過於如同向藍白國旗致敬的白色小屋。到希臘小島遊玩，旅客隨時迷失於成羣的白房子之間。為什麼希臘人都好像喜歡把自己的家刷成白色的？

首先要留意的是白色房子只流行於位於愛琴海的基克拉澤斯群島，包括聖托里尼、米科諾斯島等等受旅客喜愛的小島。

因為小島沒有木材供應，房子一般是用火山石建成，為了減少石頭吸熱，人們塗白外牆以反射陽光。而藍色的門、窗框和屋頂，則是由石灰與一種名叫「loulaki」的清潔劑調成。由於loulaki是當地人幾乎必備的日用品，使這片藍色隨處可見。

直到1930年代Ioannis Metaxas上場執政，下令島內所有人都要刷白房子外牆。原因是石灰本身具抗菌特性，用來塗牆有助遏止疾病傳播。

及至1967年的軍政府執政期間，希臘房子必須塗上藍白色成為法律。執政者希望通過統一的房子顏色，展示人民的愛國精神以及對國家的支持。

儘管此法今天已不復存在，很多希臘人家仍保留這項「傳統」。

The helmet bears the inscription ΣΕΥΘΟΥ ('of Seuthes') in Greek letters.

Found in the Golyama Kosmatka tumulus, near Shipka, Bulgaria, among the wider "Valley of the Thracian Kings". The tomb has been identified as that of the Thracian king Seuthes III (Livius; en.wikipedia), although the only human remains recovered were four teeth scattered on the floor.

The burial has been dated alternately to the 290s BCE or ca. 275 BCE, but took place in a monument of the 5th c. BCE.

On display in the Museum of History "Iskra" (Исторически музей "Искра"), Kazanlak, Bulgaria (official website; Livius; en.wikipedia; TripAdvisor).

The Pillars of Hercules appear in ancient Greek mythology in a variety of different settings. They are mentioned in the context of Atlantis, various quests, and of course, in the stories of Hercules himself. They are even mentioned in the context of historical descriptions of the world. All this raises the question, what actually were the Pillars of Heracles?

The Pillars as Metaphorical Limits

One of the very earliest references to these pillars in Greek literature comes from Pindar. He was a Greek poet who lived in c. 500 BC. In Olympian 3, he describes the athletic excellence of Theron of Acragas. In this context, he says:

“If water is best and gold is the most honored of all possessions, so now Theron reaches the farthest point by his own native excellence; he touches the pillars of Heracles. Beyond that the wise cannot set foot; nor can the unskilled set foot beyond that.”

Despite the traditional view that Odysseus travelled all over the Mediterranean, more recent research shows that this understanding may be incorrect. In reality, it would appear that the major part of the journey described in the Odyssey took place very close to the shores of Greece.

Geographical evidence that the Odyssey was based on real events

However, the simple fact that the route described in the Odyssey is logical and that Homer could have added mythological elements to his account of a real event does not necessarily mean that it was, in fact, based on real events. Is there any evidence actively supporting the conclusion that real events inspired the Odyssey?

This makes it unlikely that Homer simply invented a story and filled it with Greek mythological concepts. It seems that Homer’s story is actually filled with more local mythological concepts, hence why we do not see many of them outside of the Iliad.

Did Homer go and visit each of the locations in the Odyssey himself so as to learn of these local myths? Perhaps he did. However, it is arguably simpler to conclude that Odysseus really did travel on the journey Homer described. This would allow him to have picked up some of the local mythological traditions along the way.

Therefore, although we cannot confirm it, there is a distinct possibility that the Odyssey really was based on real events.

The maenads were, in Ancient Greece, women who took part in the cult of Dionysus. They reached ecstasy and trance by screaming and dancing. They used many Dionysian attributes such as the nebris or the thyrsus, and took drugs chewing ivy leaves.
