[natgeo] The Tuskegee airmen were the first African-American aviators in the U.S.

armed forces, and the first African-American pilots to serve in World War II.

Sadly, during the war, black Americans in many U.S.

states were still subject to the Jim Crow laws, and the military was racially segregated.

As a result, they were subjected to discrimination, both within and outside the Army.

Yet In spite of all they experienced, the Tuskegee airmen overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II.

I was fortunate to meet one of these heroic airmen, Allie C. Peek.

It was a hot Memorial Day in the year 2000, and Allie graciously sat for a portrait.

I recall sensing Allie’s pride and confidence; he had an unmistakable presence about him.

In this brief moment, I suddenly discovered that when Allie’s eyes looked out toward the airfield where we were, a reflection of the American flag filled his eyes.

It was a moment I’ll never forget.

It was inspiring to spend time with Allie, who, like so many other African-American soldiers, faced not only the horrors of World War II but discrimination at the hands of their own countrymen.

Despite that injustice, they still believed in and were willing to die for the American Dream.

1943年部隊在保山駐防，準備渡江。戰前分發物資，上好的美國進口哢嘰布制服，還有皮鞋、毛襪子，各種罐頭。結果軍需官給每人只發了六尺黃布，聽說軍需官串通一些長官把軍隊的物資倒賣到內地，大理的市面上就經常見到各種軍隊物資出售。整個部隊的物資分配從不公開，完全暗箱操作，想得到好裝備，就要給長官行賄。

按照部隊規章，每個士兵發給每天24盎司米，一份鹽；每月一份全薪，如果全花在食物上，一個月可以買一磅豬肉。一個中國士兵靠這些配額可以很好地維持生活。可是，事實上他們真正得到的僅僅是分配給他們的食物和錢的一部分，因為長官們習以為常地為自己「克扣」很大一部分。結果是大多數國民黨士兵營養不足。

1940年後停發八路軍的軍餉，毛借助了古代先賢的軍隊屯田的法寶，向軍隊提出了「自己動手，豐衣足食」的口號，在延安掀起了大生產運動，南泥灣的牛羊、南瓜、小米飯養壯了八路軍戰士，也伴著他們走上了抗-日的戰場。山東百姓同樣用煎餅大蔥供養著自己的隊伍，背包上綁著幾根大蔥的山東「土八路」，小米加步槍」也再簡練不過的形容出了共產黨軍隊的形象　。

在到達延安的最初幾年，迎來一段「黃金歲月」。沒有國民黨軍隊的圍追堵截，遠離日本侵略者，生活安定，衣食有保障。

compressed biscuits so hard that can be used as weapon- "cement block." These food do not sound good, and believe me, they tasted horridly.

The only way to eat compressed biscuits in battlefield was cut a little piece and let your saliva to wet it. On the other hand, canned meat were oily and flavorless. By comparison, modern army's food is much better! ltalian army did not eat well during WW2!

And now a guard and a prisoner are walking along the military roads, engaging in random battles as equals. They cover themselves with the same overcoat, eat from the same tin. Operation Mincemeat

Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception operation of the Second World War to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. Two members of British intelligence obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, dressed him as an officer of the Royal Marines and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain (Acting Major) William Martin. Correspondence between two British generals which suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia, with Sicily as merely the target of a feint, was also placed on the body.

Part of the wider Operation Barclay, Mincemeat was based on the 1939 Trout memo, written by Rear Admiral John Godfrey, the Director of the Naval Intelligence Division, and his personal assistant, Lieutenant Commander Ian Fleming. With the approval of the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and the military commander in the Mediterranean, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the plan began by transporting the body to the southern coast of Spain by submarine and releasing it close to shore, where it was picked up the following morning by a Spanish fisherman. The nominally neutral Spanish government shared copies of the documents with the Abwehr, the German military intelligence organisation, before returning the originals to the British. Forensic examination showed they had been read and Ultra decrypts of German messages showed that the Germans fell for the ruse. German reinforcements were shifted to Greece and Sardinia before and during the invasion of Sicily; Sicily received none.

The full effect of Operation Mincemeat is not known, but Sicily was liberated more quickly than anticipated and losses were lower than predicted. The events were depicted in Operation Heartbreak, a 1950 novel by the former cabinet minister Duff Cooper, before one of the intelligence officers who planned and carried out Mincemeat, Ewen Montagu, wrote a history in 1953. Montagu's work formed the basis for the 1956 British film The Man Who Never Was. A second British film based on the events was released in 2022 under the title Operation Mincemeat.

十九世紀歐洲的報紙開始普及的時刻，當時就盛行一種類似政治漫畫的文類，以地圖上的國家擬人化（或擬動物化）的方式來解釋歐洲列強當時的政治衝突或時局演變。

十九世紀後期的大清帝國，也從較為普遍接受外國文化的南方省分開始，出現所謂的「畫報」。畫報是一種在中國識字率普及前很重要的印刷媒體，頭版以插畫大圖講述國際局勢要聞或是一些離奇事件，吸引都市居民購買，其中大概最有名的就屬點石齋畫報。

這張名為「時局圖」的圖畫，記錄了清光緒二十八年（1902年）當時的遠東局勢。雖說是遠東，其實大致上都是在講列強在中國的巧取豪奪及彼此勢力之間的恐怖平衡。

1902年距今120年，剛好是兩個甲子，所以干支與今年一樣是壬寅年。那一年是邁入二十世紀的第三年，兩年前的庚子拳亂、一年前的辛丑和約，才讓中國元氣大傷，慈禧太后掌權末期的大清帝國朝廷，幾乎要被這最後一擊，將帝國最後一口血都吐出來了。

這幅圖畫的細節眾多，我們先從台灣看起。番薯形狀的台灣在大約北回歸線通過的地方被紅線綁住，當我們循著紅線往源頭追溯，就會發現紅線握在日本手裡。這裡當然指的是八年前甲午戰爭後，台灣已經割讓給日本作為殖民地的事實。

日本的形象是一個頭部為太陽的人，他除了手上的紅線綁著台灣，腳上的紅線還勾著高麗。

甲午戰爭後，原本作為朝鮮宗主國的滿清已經出局。日本正式將勢力浸入朝鮮宮廷，當時唯一還能制衡日本勢力的只剩下俄國，不過三年後的日俄戰爭，就讓唯一的牽制力量失效。八年後的1910年，日本正式併吞朝鮮。

除了台灣與朝鮮，日本擬人化的太陽紅色光芒還深入到了幾個地方：遼東半島、山東半島與北京所在的直隸省。

大家應該都記得歷史課本有教過，乙未和約中原本中國除了要割讓台灣給日本之外，還要割讓遼東半島；但遼東半島幾乎等於是扼住京畿的咽喉，更不用說天然良港大連港旅順港的戰略位置與經濟價值，幾乎可以說拿下遼東等於拿下整個華北。

所以當時就有三個國家：俄德法干涉還遼。而這其中喊聲喊得最勤的自然是俄國。俄國當然也是日本佔領東亞的最大障礙。

我們看看整張圖中最有存在感的俄國。是一隻黑熊，額頭上有雙頭鷹。

為什麼是雙頭鷹？因為雙頭鷹是東羅馬帝國的象徵，十五世紀奧斯曼土耳其帝國攻陷了君士坦丁堡以後，莫斯科大公娶了東羅馬末代皇帝的姪女後正式繼承了帝位，獲得了沙皇（Tsar，發音來自凱薩 Caesar）的封號，成為俄羅斯帝國，所以就繼承了雙頭鷹徽記。

這隻有點像貓(?)的黑熊三隻腳(?)分別踩在外蒙與滿州的邊界上，進一步看，三隻腳的前緣分別踩在狹西（陝西）、直隸、遼東的領土上，直接表明了俄羅斯帝國下一步的侵吞計畫。

日俄兩國都意圖拿下遼東、直指北京，兩國在遠東的衝突將不可避免一戰。這是三年後日俄戰爭爆發前的基本態勢。

就在遼東旁邊的山東半島上出現了一個游泳圈，上面插著一面國旗。這面紅白黑的國旗是德意志第二帝國的國旗。插旗的地點自然就是當時的德國殖民地青島港。

有趣的是這個游泳圈也連著一隻鬥牛犬的尾巴。這隻鬥牛犬就是英國。

可以看見英國這隻鬥牛犬兩隻前腳踩著廣東廣西，後腳踩著浙江與安徽，整條尾巴橫掃江南區域。這裡指的是十九世紀末期，英國試圖從殖民地香港往北發展，意圖吃下整條揚子江流域，作為其勢力範圍。

那英國被誰擋下來呢？以前歷史課本有教過，是美國。

讓我們看看那隻代表美國的國鳥白頭鷹，整隻盤踞在菲律賓群島上。這代表的是就在四年前的1898年，美國在美西戰爭打敗了西班牙帝國，獲得了菲律賓這塊殖民地，從此以後美國正式插旗遠東列強爭霸的遊戲。

但是只能說美國來得太晚了，當美國在十九世紀的最後姍姍來遲，當時的遠東局勢是英國控制了香港準備吃下華南華中、法國從印度支那準備染指廣西雲貴、日本控制了朝鮮台灣準備拿下遼東、德國控制山東、大胃王（或為最後贏家）俄國則是幾乎控制了外蒙、滿州以及新疆外圍。

所以美國提出了技術性暫停，就是主張「門戶開放政策」，用外交辭令來說就是為了中國領土完整，大家保持開放與公平競爭。但用白話文來說就是「我不管啦我來太晚了你們前面玩的不算啦！」

但也必須說因為這個冠冕堂皇的門戶開放政策讓晚清朝廷終止了一連串即將被列強蠶食鯨吞的局面。（當然這對後來繼起的中國政權與中國人民到底是好事還是壞事就見仁見智）

美國老鷹雖然虎視眈眈瞧著中國大陸，但是仔細看英國鬥牛犬，他瞧也不瞧美國一眼，反倒是眼睛瞪著一個方向：那就是代表法國的青蛙。

青蛙的兩隻後腳盤踞著中南半島，代表當時整個法屬印度支那進入法國控制（只有泰國倖免於難保持獨立），而牠的兩隻前腳更有趣了，一隻踏著西康省（現在這個地名已經沒有了），另一隻則捧著海南島，這分別代表著法國以印度支那作為基地對華南與西南的野心。

就在這樣強敵環伺的情形下，大清國從官員到百姓反應又是如何呢？

在中國的內陸有四張圖代表著中國的官民常態。首先是直隸旁邊穿著官服的老人，象徵大清國朝廷，而且他的臉跟鬍子造型看起來很像李鴻章。

他在睡覺。對危機渾然不覺。

睡覺的人下方則是一對宴飲的男女，用玻璃杯喝紅酒。這看起來與其說是恩愛夫妻不如說是有錢大爺與窯姐。那當然象徵甚麼也不用多解釋。

宴飲男女的左邊是一個大清官員拿著銅錢，旁邊寫著伊犁。這應該指的是曾紀澤以賠款而非割地的形式解決了伊犁危機。

最左上角的圖比較有趣，可能有很多的詮釋方法。我自己的猜測是中國人是右邊光頭老者，讀著之乎者也的古書讀到睡著；另一邊廂外族打扮的壯漢則趁機將財寶搬運一空，可能也在諷刺陷在四書五經儒教思想的中國根本無力對應日新月異的國際局勢列強侵吞危機。

這張有趣的1902年遠東局勢圖，記錄了當下的國際事實，但是畫圖的當下，沒有人知道接下來的發展會是如何。

他們不知道的是，一年後的1903年，英國從印度發兵佔領了西藏。三年後的1905年，日俄戰爭爆發，從此在遼東與華北，日本再也沒有敵人，直到二戰結束日本投降的前幾天蘇聯對日宣戰並且立刻拿下東北。當然還有九年後的1911年，因為保路事件導致的一連串陰錯陽差，一個倉促起事的革命就這樣革掉了大清國268年的江山。

當時的他們永遠都不可能知道。這是每次研究歷史的時候既迷人又危險的地方。

香港漫畫家阿塗昨天發表了一張"The situation in the far east 2022"的作品（請看連結），他提到創作的動機就是從這張晚清1902年版時局圖而來，所以跟大家分享這張有趣的政治象徵地圖。

On Aug. 1, a ship dropped its unusual cargo into a patch of ocean some 70 miles northwest of San Francisco: three orange robots, each more than 20 feet long and shaped like a torpedo. For a day, the aquatic drones autonomously prowled the waters, scanning nearly 50 square miles of ocean floor.

Some 3,500 feet beneath the surface, an apparition popped up on the robots’ powerful sonar. Down in the darkness, the drones saw a ghost.
